Lehr, 67, prominent Gackle businessman and lifelong resident of the Gackle community, died Tuesday, December 20, 1983 at a hospital in Rochester, MN where he had been hospitalized for two days due to chronic illness. Lehr, 67, prominent Gackle businessman and lifelong resident of the Gackle community, died Tuesday, December 20, 1983 at a hospital in Rochester, MN where he had been hospitalized for two days due to chronic illness. Mr. Lehr was born December 24, 1915 at Gackle, the son of Andrew F. and Magdalena (Hieb) Lehr. He attended the Gackle Public School where he received his elementary education and was graduated from Gackle High School in 1983. He graduated from Jamestown College in 1937, and assumed a position in the First State Bank in Gackle. He received additional business training at various schools. He entered the military service May 8, 1941 at Fort Sneling, MN, received his basic training and was assigned to a training unit with the Corp of Engineers at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He and Hazel Marthaler were married November 14, 1942 at Omaha, NE. They made their home at Fort Leonard Wood, MO until November 24, 1945, when he was discharged with the rank of T/Sgt. Following his discharge from service they returned to Gackle where he resumed his association with the First State Bank and with his father in financial ventures. Following the death of his father in 1966, he continued his association with the First State Bank in which he served as president; the A. F. Lehr Company of which he served as secretary treasurer and the First State Bank Insurance Agency, all in Gackle, until his death. He was active in community affairs, being associated with the Gackle Future Development Corp., Gackle Hospital, Gackle School Board, Lions Club, and the City of Gackle as its clerk. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Mayer-Morlock Post No. 250, American Legion in Gackle, and the Gackle County Club. Surviving are his wife Hazel; one son Mark Lehr; and one daughter, CeCe (Mrs. Thomas McBurnett), both of Gackle; six grandchildren, one sister Ella (Mrs. Charles) Hamilton. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1959, his father in 1966, a sister Clara, and two sisters and one brother in infancy. A memorial service was held December 23, 1983 at the Grace Episcopal Church in Jamestown, with Dr. M.W. Andresen, pastor, officiating. Interment will be made in the Gackle cemetery.
