Daisy Dewey Grubbs Born 1898 Died 1996 On 2 Jun 1849 George Washington Bell was sworn in to the post of U.S. Postmaster for the post office in Michael, IL, The records is in the Appointments for Tock Island, IL. George was a farmer and had also served as county clerk in Lawrence. He was betrayed by a person who he thought was his friend. The friend did not have the same view on slavery that George did. George was killed by that so called friend in Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, KS during the Civil War. George Washington Bell was born on May 7, 1821, in Urbana, Ohio, the son of George Bell and Nancy Bradley Worley. He married Ann Maria "Mary" Thompson on September 5, 1844, in Rock Island, Illinois. They had six children in 14 years. He died a hero on August 21, 1863, in Quantrell's Raid on Lawrence, Kansas, at the age of 42, and was buried there. The following is the story of his final hours... "Captain George Washington Bell was (Douglas) County Clerk. He lived (with his family) on the hill overlooking the town (of Lawrence). He saw (Quantrell's) Raiders before they made their first charge. He seized his gun and started out with the hope of reaching the main street before them, and joining the citizens in defending the town. His family tried to dissuade him, but his only reply was "If they take Lawrence they must do it over my dead body." With a prayer for courage he started on the run, but he was too late. Before he could reach the main street the raiders had possession. He endevered to get round by a back way and came to the ravine west of the street. Here he met other citizens and asked them "Where shall we meet?" They assured him that it was too late to meet anywhere, and urged him to save himself ehile he could. He turned back as if intending to go home again, but the raiders had now scattered all over and he was in the midst of them. Finding escape impossible, he went into an unfinished brick house and climbed up on the joists, together with another man. A raider came in and began shooting at them. He interceded for his friend and soon found out that this assailent was an old friend of his who at eaten at his table. He appealed to him in such a way that he promised to spare their lives if they would come down. They came down and the man took them outside where about twenty of his companions were waiting. "Shoot him, Shoot him" was the cry." He asked for a moment to pray , which was granted him , when they shot him through with four bullets. Mr. Bell was a man of excellent character, widely known, and everywhere respected. He left a wife and six children to miss and mourn him." The family lived at 1008 Ohio Street which sits on Mount Oread in Lawrence, the house is now on the National Register of Historical Places. The house was built by George Bell and is located across the street from Corbin Hall. From The Bell House by Kris Babington "Captain George W. Bell was county clerk for Lawrence. He lived on the hill overlooking the town. During Quantrill's raid he saw the raiders before they made their first charge. He seized his gun and started out with hope of reaching the main street before them, and joining the citizens in defending the town. The raiders reached him first and George and one of his friends tried hiding in an old brick house. One of the men came up to kill them but it turned out that he knew the two men and had sat down and eaten with them, so George begged for him not kill them. The man granted their wish but as they came out of the house the other raiders were chanting "kill them, kill them". George asked if they could have a moment to pray; they knelt down and prayed, then were killed. Then Annie Bell had to raise her four children without her husband. The Bell house survived 7 attempts to be set on fire. Only once was it set on fire, but Annie saved the house from completely burning. Annie and her children lived in the cellar of the house and rented the upper bedrooms of the house for awhile. The basement opens to a ravine that cannot be seen from the street. In the house the paint in the bedrooms and living room has had a faint touch of peach color added to create a warm, rosy aura. Open shelves, a plate rack, and a nook set into the doorway display crockery and glassware in the kitchen. The kitchen is also graced by an antique gas stove. Its green and cream surfaces reflect the color scheme of the rest of the house. Deep windows and carved stairwells have been enhanced by polished wood floors. The house is mainly painted white with light green decor. Skylights have been added to brighten the upstairs rooms. The bathroom is tiled with green ceramic. It was carved out of space previously occupied by a bedroom. Storage closets with louvered doors for air circulation have also been added to the upstairs."
