This pioneer was Mrs. Caroline Engel. Burial services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church, after a brief service had been held in the home. Pastor M. W. Vomhof spoke words of comfort and consolation to the mourning children, relatives, and friends. Burial was made in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Mrs. Caroline Schaffner Engel was born in Alsace-Lorraine, February 3, 1862. It was there that she also was made a child of God through the washing of regeneration in the blessed Sacrament of Holy Baptism. She immigrated to America about fifty-five years ago. On the 16th of June, 1887, she became the bride of George Engel. To this union eight children were born. Two of the children departed this life in infancy, while a third, Walter, preceded his parents in death while serving his country with our nation's expeditionary forces in France during the World War. Mr. Engel entered upon his eternal rest July 26, 1936. Left to mourn Mrs. Engel's departure are two sons, William (Grace) and Herman (Jennie), three daughters, Mrs. Rudolph (Carrie) Becker, Mrs. Arthur C. (Emma) Boehmer and Anna, and also nineteen grandchildren. Mrs. Engel and her husband were among the early settlers in Perkins County. Mr. Engel made his homstead claim in 1886, northwest of Grant, in the Farmersville community. It was to this homestead that Mrs. Engel came as a bride; it was here that she lived in her quiet, unassuming manner, her industrious, Christian life; it was here that she also answered the call to leave this life. Aside from her husband and family she found her greatest interest in the work of the church of her faith. She was one of the charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was privileged to see her congregation grow from a small group, worshipping in a sod house, to a flourishing congregation worshipping in a churchly edifice. Though she has now gone, her memory shall linger long and be an inspiration to all who were privileged to know her. Tribune Sentinel Newspaper - November 23, 1939
