Cass Marlene Stephens was born on July 8, 1927, in Highmore, SD, to Charles "Butch" and Mary Stephens. She grew up in Highmore and graduated from Highmore High School. She then moved to Pierre to attend and graduate from the Pierre Nursing Program. She was a nurse for eighteen years in the Pierre Clinic and St. Mary's Hospital. She then took a position with the South Dakota Department of Health until her retirement. Cass married Donald Gerlach on August 12, 1948 in Pierre. To this union, three children were born. She enjoyed camping, boating, and soaking up the sun. She also loved to travel, dance and play cards. She was a loyal fan of her children and grandchildren in all of the sports they participated. She was also known to always have treats on hand for all of the neighborhood kids who would stop by the house. Cass is survived by her son, Steve ( Jeanne) Gerlach, of Tucson, AZ and their children: Jason (Anja) Gerlach of Tucson, AZ, Joshua (Erika) Gerlach of Colorado Springs, CO and Jeremy Gerlach of Scottsdale, AZ; son, Dan (Kathy) Gerlach of Pierre and his children: Jesse Gerlach, of Las Vegas, NV, and Toni Gerlach of Deadwood, SD; daughter, Patti Reeves, of Sioux Falls and her children: Rachelle (Joe) Daniels, of Sioux Falls, and Kelsie (Dan Morstad)Reeves of Chicago, IL; nine great-grandchildren . She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years; her parents; brother, Kenneth Stephens; and a sister-in-law Janice Stabnow. Memorials can be made to Heartland Hospice, 3112 North Swan Road, Tucson, AZ 85712.
