He grew up in Pierre and graduated from Riggs High School where he was on the 1944 State Basketball Championship team. After high school, he served as a firefighter in the US Navy for 2 years. After serving in the Navy, Don returned to Pierre to run Gerlach's Plumbing and Heating for 20 years. He then worked for SD State Engineers office until his retirement in 1987. He married Castle (Cass) Stephens from Highmore, SD on August 12, 1948. To this union, three children were born. Don served on the Pierre Fire Department and on the City Commission. He was also a member of the Masons, the American Legion and VFW. Don enjoyed boating, camping, playing cards, traveling, working in his yard and rose garden. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. He will be remembered for his fairness and honesty, his willingness to help others and his sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law Charles (Butch) and Mary Stephens and a brother-in-law Kenneth Stephens Isburg Funeral Home website- 2008
