Per information received from contributor "JC48", the first name was actually "Catharine", with "Kate" to be used as a nickname. Am accepting that edit change request since that type of name is entirely possible to be found with that nickname. The parent relationship links are being added to this memorial via separate information by this same contributor. The maiden name now appears to be "Snyder", but can be found as "Snider" in some sources. Will accept the edit request to use "Snyder" for the maiden name with that observation. Note: in the George Searles plot in Evergreen cemetery is a John H Snyder, 1944-1915. He was married to a daughter of George Searles (Eliza J. Searles Snyder), but is not related to Catharine as far as is known. That they share a common name appears to be a coincidence. Previous Evergreen cemetery researchers thought that the maiden name was "Surles", but that now is evidently based on her use of her first married surname ("Searles") when she married again in 1909. Exactly what source was found that spelled that married name as "Surles" is not known to this contributor at this time. Being married using a married surname and not the true maiden surname was common in the early 1900's, so prior researchers should not be faulted for not always knowing the difference. -------------- Marriages: > "Kate’s first husband George Searles died Apr 12, 1903 and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery. Her second husband, Harley, and his first wife and child are also buried in the same public grounds section. --------------- OBITUARY: Fairfield Daily Journal Saturday Nov. 14, 1914 MRS. KATE FEASEL DIED EARLY TODAY Mrs. Kate Feasel, 80 years old, the widow of Harley FEASEL, died at the Mt. Pleasant Hospital (sic. in Mt. Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa) at five o'clock this morning. She had been at the Hospital for about four weeks. She was a resident of Fairfield, having lived at 200 West Kirkwood street. Funeral services will be held Monday at nine a.m., from the Frazey funeral home with Mrs. L.E. Mendenhall. KATE FEASEL DEAD Mrs. Kate FEASEL died early Saturday morning at the hospital in Mt. Pleasant where she had been for the last four weeks. Mrs. FEASEL was nearly eighty years of age and was a resident of this city. Funeral services were held at the Frazey undertaking parlors Monday morning conducted by Mrs. L. E. Mendenhall. *Both obituaries above transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned. Note: The maiden name was once believed to be SURLES, but that now appears to be a mistaken and misspelled version of her first married surname, SEARLES. The married surname used in the obituaries is FEASEL; she can also be found under the married surname of FEAZEL. Born about 1834 and died on November 14, 1914. Listed in the Fairfield Daily Journal account as the widow of "Harley FEASEL" - meaning Harley Gordon Feasel. Kate FEASEL was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Row. 4. Space 27. Her burial spot is without a headstone (it is located in the public grounds/rows section of the cemetery). -------------------- The following marriage story item is transcribed verbatim from the microfilmed copy of the newspaper, but it should be noted that the reference to "Harry Cecil" was likely a phonetic spelling error in place of "Harley Gordon Feasel". The ages attributed to the bride and groom do not match the known/calculated birthdates, so that information should be evaluated with caution. The circumstances of the petition mentioned in the following story has not been researched by this contributor. Fairfield Tribune Wednesday April 7, 1909 Pg. 2 Col. 4 "....Mrs. Kate Searles of this city, age 71, and Harry Cecil, age 35, were married in Ottumwa Monday and will go to housekeeping at once on a five-acre tract purchased by the bride down on Cedar. Owing to the fact that a petition for the appointment of a guardian for Mrs. Searles had bene filed in the local district court, the marriage license could not be secured here."
