Will use the April 12, 1903 DOD for this memorial but with that observation. The headstone inscription for George Searles is now far too weathered to interpret the inscription with any confidence for clarification. ------------------- Married first to Susan L. Lowe/Loe (the initial "L" may or may not be a reference to the maiden name). They were married in/about 1839 according to George's obituary. At least six children per George's obituary: > John W. Searles > Mrs. Reuben Gregory > Mrs. Robert Hanna (Mary Anna Searles Hanna) > Mrs. John Snyder (Eliza J. Searles Snyder) > Nelson Searles > George W. Searles (died in Civil War) Two of their children, Nelson Searles and Mary Anna Searles Hanna are buried in the Searles family plot, but in unmarked graves. Mary's husband Robert Hanna, who died in 1907, does have a very distinctive round cylinder shaped headstone, however. --------------- Married to Catharine "Kate" Snyder (a/k/a Snider) on October 15, 1883 in Jefferson county, Iowa. --------------- Obituary: Fairfield Ledger-Weekly Wednesday April 16, 1903 (pages not numbered) A Half Century in Iowa. George W. Searles, an aged resident of this city, died at his home Sunday. The funeral will take place this afternoon, and the exercises will be conducted by Rev. W. J. Funkey. Mr. Searles was a native of Yellow Springs, O., and was born July 22d, 1819. When twenty years of age (sic. in/about 1839) he was married to Susan Loe (sic. a/k/a Lowe, needs clarification), who died here October 3d, 1872. Five children by this marriage survive the parents - John W. of New York, Mrs. Reuben Gregory of Benedict, Neb., Mrs. Robert Hanna of Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. John Snyder of Chicago, Ill.,and Nelson Searles of Lincoln, Neb. Another son, George W., lost his life in the Civil War. The family came to Iowa in 1853, resided until 1859 near Brighton, and then removed to this city. Mr. Searles was again married, October 15th, 1883, to Mrs. Katherine Snyder (sic), who survives him. In his more active years Mr. Searles had many warm friends in this community. He was a genial companion and a good citizen, and many of his acquaintances of earlier years will mourn his death.
