A removal of a cataract had not made Mrs. Converse very ill apparently and during her stay in the hospital, she apparently had felt fine, her physician said, and the sudden attack came as she was preparing to go home, happy in her restored vision. Alice Vanderwerken was born November 21, 1873 at Cohoes, New York and was married to George Convers at Minneapolis, Ottawa county, Kansas, August 29, 1894. There were six children born to this union, two having preceded her in death. Harry Converse and Mary Hamit live at Horace, Kansas, Emma Parsons and Guy Converse at Ada, Kansas. She also has one sister, and three brothers living at Ada. Moved Here in 1932 Mr. and Mrs. Converse lived in Scott county for a number of years, and came to Greely county in 1932. Mrs. Converse was blind in both eyes for more than two years and was almost deaf. She was examined by a registered ophthalmologist, Anna M. Wetzel, on October 25, 1937, who pronounced her eligible for blind treatment. She had cataracts on both eyes, which it was stated could be removed. On June 1, 1938 authorization was granted from C.J. Mullen, state supervising ophthalmologist of the state board of social welfare, to Dr. C. L. Williams of Dodge City to start treatments on Mrs. Converse's eyes. She was taken to the St. Anthony's hospital at Dodge City on June 11th. June 17 word was received from Dr. Williams that the first dressing was removed and Mrs. Converse was much delighted that she could see. On Wednesday evening June 22, word was received here that she had died, being sick only a few hours. Dr. Williams stated that Mrs. Converse was a wonderful patient and well liked by everyone at the hospital. The sisters often spoke of her as a good cheerful patient. She was taken by Harry Waldren, the local undertaker, to Ada, where funeral services were held Sunday afternoon. This was her original home, where her mother, father, and two children were buried.
