Catherine "Kate" Harader Johnston was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, at her father's first regular pastorate, not far from Clifton Mills, (West) Virginia, on 26 June 1849. With her father's family she migrated by covered wagon over the Old Cumberland Road to the Mississippi River where some of the family goods were lost in a ferry boat accident during the crossing of the water. The family continued by railroad to the end of the line at Ottumwa, Iowa, and from there they proceeded to Creston by stage coach. Beyond that point there was no organized transportation, so the last leg of their Journey, from Creston to Eureka, on the Nodaway River in Adams County, the whole family carried everything that they owned on their backs. The year was 1856 and Christian Harader had been called by his brother Jacob, and his sister Mary's husband, John Morton, to organize a Dunker church at neighboring Mount Etna. The year was the sane that Catharine was seven years old, and her father was starting to build the Eureka Mill on the river. Catharine's mother died at the age of forty in 1867, shortly after her daughter's marriage, and was buried but a short distance north from what was later to become the John Johnston plot at the Mt. Etna Cemetery. the father, Christian Harader. later married twice-widowed Mrs. Sarah Ann Keethler Lewis Creighton. Well-known. prominent Dunker elder, Harader established and presided over several Brethren churches in southern Iowa, southwestern Missouri, and southern Kansas where he died a few days short of eighty years of age, at his rural home near Arkansas City, in 1905. Christian had eight children by his marriage to Mary Ann Cupp, and he had one son by his second wife. Catharine Johnston was the third child born in the first family. She was a devout and life-long member of the Dunker Church at Mount Etna, Iowa. John Johnston, coming to Iowa in 1846 with his parents, was a recently-discharged young veteran hired out to Christian Harader of Eureka, on the Nodaway, seven miles downstream from Mt. Etna, in north Adams County. His employer was a mill owner and operator and a farmer. He was also a well-known Dunker elder. On Sunday, 1 September 1867, about two years after his discharge from the Indiana 20th. Regiment of the Union Army, John Johnston was united in marriage with Miss Catharine Harader by Justice-of-the-Peace Levi I. Prickett at Eureka, Adams County, Iowa. Catharine was the eldest daughter of Rev. Christian Harader and Mary Ann Cupp Harader. John Johnston (Jr.) was a prominent citizen of Washington Twp., near Mt. Etna, Adams County, Iowa. The third son of the previous couple's children, he began life in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, 16 February 1842. Although a fairly well-read farmer in his day, John Johnston was a self-educated man, and his formal schooling consisted of out two years during his early youth in Butler County in southern Ohio. Besides serving as color guard and sergeant in the Indiana 20th. during the Civil War, Johnston was an officer in the GAR. He was a member of the farmers' Alliance and the Industrial Union, and treasurer of the last-named organization. Politically he was registered as a Democrat. The Deaths of John and Catharine Johnston * Converted late in life from Roman Catholic to Dunker faith, John. Johnston retired from his Mt. Etna farm and moved to Corning, Iowa. There he died on Friday, 23 March 1919, following a long and painful illness of a complication of diseases which began with a hard fall over a water bucket when he was doing chores at his Mt. Etna farm, and ended after having kept him bedfast for six months. An unusually large number of friends and relatives attended the funeral services which were conducted from the Mt. Etna Church of the Brethren with Rev. Harry Rogers and Rev. Homer Caskey officiating. The old soldier was buried in his G.A.R. uniform on Sunday, 30 March 1919, in the Mount Etna Cemetery not far from the graves of his parents. John Johnston, the younger, was seventy- seven years, of age when he died. Living on a veteran's widow's pension, Catharine continued at her home with son Waldo, daughter Rose, and niece Alma Johnston at 403 Loomis Ave., Corning, Iowa. There at seventy-seven years, of age she died of cancer on Tuesday, 29 June 1920. She was buried in the Mt. Etna Cemetery, beside her husband and but a few yards away from the graves of her mother, Mary Ann Cupp Harader, and her maternal grandparents, Frederick and Susan Shaffer Cupp.
