Wharton, 1840 - 1920 Mrs. M. V. Wharton died at her home in Loup city on Tuesday, February 2, 1920. she suffered greatly from a tumor for some time which was the cause of her death. Catherine Matilda Duzenberry was born at Yorktown, New York, September 28, 1840, and was 79 years, 4 months and 4 days of age at her death. At the age of twenty she was married to William Alfonso Harrison. Two children were born to this union, David, deceased and Catherine, Now Mrs. Cossingham (sic). In 1868 she was married to Joseph Curtis Wharton, no children being born to this union,William Curtis Wharton being adopted in infancy, Mr. and Mrs. Wharton moved from Peekshill, New York to Loup City in 1878 and homesteaded one and one-half miles northeast of town. Mr. Wharton died in 1891. Mrs. Wharton remained on the homestead until 1900 when she moved to Loup city and bought the present Wharton hotel. Mrs. Wharton is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Catherine Cassingham, an adopted son, William C. Wharton, four grand children, Mrs. W. H. Simpson of Loup City, Charles E. Wharton of Casper, Wyoming and Lena and Lottie Wharton and one great grand daughter, Margaret Simpson. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. J. M. Bates, an Episcopal minister of Red Cloud had charge of the funeral services. Mrs. Wharton was a devoted member of Episcopal church for many years. Beautiful music was furnished by L. N. Smith, Misses Eunice and Muriel Chase and Mrs. Beth Owen. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery. Only a few weeks ago the publisher of The Times was visiting with Mrs. Wharton and she related many experiences of the old days in Loup city. When she came to Loup City there was no railroad here and she came here by way of Kearney, traveling overland from Kearney by stage. The trip by stage took a long time and it was night when they arrived in Loup City. When she went to her room at the hotel she encountered seven men sleeping on the floor, who could get no accommodations. Great was Mrs. Wharton's surprise the next morning when she found that Loup city consisted of only five or six houses. The name "Loup City" sounded big to them back in New York state and it was quite a shock to find it such a frontier town. However, Mrs. Wharton quickly adapted herself to conditions here and she was a true pioneer, administering to neighbors in sickness and want and her personality was of great influence for good here in pioneer days.
