Catherine's family emigrated to Canada between June of 1835 and Catherine's birth in Canada in September of 1836. They settled in North Easthope Township in Perth County, Ontario where her father farmed 100 acres. Family tradition has it that Catherine's family were French Huguenots. The available information indicates they were members of the Reformed Church (Calvinist) in Germany. The census in Canada list their religion as Lutheran. In 1855, Catherine married John Lanz in the neighboring county of Waterloo. After their marriage, they appear to have made their home close to her parents. By the 1861 census, when Catherine's father was 58 and Catherine and her sister Eva had both married, her father's 100 acres has been divided with her father retaining 12 acres, Eva's husband receiving 50 acres, and Catherine and her husband farming 38 acres. By 1871, Eva and her husband had relocated to New Hamburg village and John and Catherine remained in North Easthope Township. Here, John and Catherine raised their family of 9 children until 1878 or 1879 when they followed many of their family and friends to Plymouth, Nebraska.
