Description	:	Son of Conrad Lanz and Katharina Zulauf, John's sister is Anna Catharina Lanz Forler (1839 - 1892) who married Philip Forler in Phillipsburg, Waterloo County, Ontario in 1860. John's parents and his younger sister Anna Catherina emigrated to Canada in 1846 aboard the Victor. Family history has it that John came to Canada when he was 16, which would agree with the date his parents and sister arrived; however, he is not listed among the passengers of the Victor. At the time of the 1851 Canadian census, John is living with his father and sister in Wilmot, Waterloo County, Ontario where his father's occupation is listed as weaver and John is working as a carpenter. In 1855, John married Catherina Schick, daughter of Johannes Schick and Katharina Boltz, and they made their home in North Easthope, Perth County, Ontario. Between 1856 and 1876, nine known children were born to the marriage, all in Ontario. Sometime between 1878 and 1879, the family left Ontario for Plymouth, Nebraska where they purchased a farm one mile west of town. From the 1900 Nebraska Plat Book, John owned 160 acres described as the NE quarter of Section 19, Township 4 N, Range 4 East. Immediately south of his property on the same plat are two 80 acre parcels owned by his sons George and Philip. On November 18, 1901, John passed away in Plymouth at the home of his son John E Lanz.
