Catherine Sophie Dorothee Hitzemann (nee Menke) was born at Wulfsode, Hanover, Germany, October 17, 1842, where she was also baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. Read More	DIED Mrs. Catherine Hitzemann passed away at her home in this city on Sunday afternoon, May 30, 1920, after an extended illness, during which she suffered several paralytic strokes. Catherine Sophie Dorothee Hitzemann (nee Menke) was born at Wulfsode, Hanover, Germany, October 17, 1842, where she was also baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. In 1860 she came to America, making Chicago, Ill., her first home. In 1861 she was joined in holy wedlock with Mr. Henry Hitzemann and they made their home in Town Hannover, Cook county, Ill. This union was blessed with nine children--six sons and three daughtrers--one son dying in infancy. From Cook county, Ill., they moved to Lowden, Iowa, and lived there until 1885, when they moved to a farm in Johnson township, Plymouth county, Iowa. In 1892 they came to Akron, which has since remained the family home. In 1903 her husband preceded her into eternity. Since then she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Emma Reemts. She was strong and healthy even at her advanced age, until she suddenly was taken down by a paralytic stroke on February 24th of this year. Most of the time she was sitting up in a chair and her family hoped to see her health restored once more, but God in His unsearchable but wise consel thought it better to take her home. She went to sleep May 30, 1920, at 2:40 p.m., in her Lord and as we surely hope, passed into life everlasting, her age being 77 years, 7 months, and theirteen days. Five sons and three daughters survive--nearly all of Akron and vicinity--August, Mrs. Wm. Simeon, Charles (of Sioux City), Herman, Mrs. Wm. H. Whitehouse, George, Louis and Mrs. Chris. Reemts; also eighteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was a kind and devoted wife and mother, and a true and helpful friend and neighbor. Her sympathies were quickly aroused by sickness or distress and many will remember and cherish her deeds of kindness in time of need or suffering. Mrs. Hitzemann was one of the organizers and charter members of Trinity Lutheran church and its Ladies Aid society here in 1894, wherein she always remained a zealous and active worker. The funeral services held Tuesday afternoon in Trinity Lutheran church, were very largely attended. Rev. F. A. Meske preached a strong and conforting sermon, using a text that Mrs. Hitzemann had chosen--Psalm 27:1, 4, 8. The Ladies Aid went in a body from the house to the church. There was a profusion of beautiful floral offerings. Interment was in Riverside cemetery, beside her husband. Relatives who came from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hitzemann of Sioux City; his daughter, Mrs. Ellen Lewis, of Columbia, S. D.; Mrs. Dora Breuer, of Sibley, Iowa. Akron Register Tribune Thursday, June 3, 1920 Akron, Iowa
