Read More	FOX, CECIL LEWIS—Cecil Lewis Fox, second child of Lewis and Etta Kirst Fox, was born on a farm in Chelsea township, January 30, 1902. Cecil died Tuesday, November 23, 1993, at the age of 91 years, 9 months and 24 days. He had been a patient of the Long Term Care Unit of the Fillmore county Hospital for nearly two years, receiving loving care. Cecil started to school when he was four years old because his older brother, Harry, being very bashful, would not go without Cecil. They attended Chelsea, District No. 32, a one room country school. They were later joined by brother, Ronald and sisters, Florence and Hazel. When the brothers were old enough to do field work, they often picked corn to the east end of the field, walked on to school and then their father would have a wagon waiting for them to pick more corn on their way home. Formal education for Cecil ended in the eighth grade as his father felt that the boys’ help was needed at home. Cecil often worked out for neighbors, he was not a large person, and envied the bigger boys for their strength. Work on the farm was hard with few conveniences, farm work was done with horses and he could see no purpose in keeping horses for pleasure in later years—they were only work to him. He was much more interested in mechanics and enjoyed his tractors, machinery and cars. Cecil liked to “tinker” from a very young age and built the family’s first radio, a crystal set. He later made a power lawn mower before they were common. In the 1950’s, he took flying lessons, flying a Piper Club. On April 14, 1928, Cecil and Mabel Yates were married at Sidney, Ia. They set up housekeeping on the John Nelson rental farm southeast of Geneva, living there until 1941, then moving to another farm two miles east. They moved to Geneva in 1959, when they retired from farming. Cecil was a member of the Chelsea E.U.B. Church, the Geneva E.U.B. Church and the Geneva Methodist Church, attending as long as he could. For many years, Cecil worked at the John Deere Implement Co., in Geneva, as well as farming. He was the parts man and had the reputation of doing his job well, knowing which machine customers had and what part they might need. At one time he drove a truck to Omaha and Iowa to pick up new machinery from the factories and delivering to customers. He greatly respected Frank Friesen and bob Grant, early owners of the dealership. Later he worked for M&M Distributing Co., and then for Wheelers. During semi-retirement he worked for Bob Cellar in the Cellar Feed Co. These businesses were all at one time located in the block on the west side of the square. Cecil spent many years going to work on this block. He was a loyal and dedicated employee. Cecil enjoyed fishing, hunting and was a member of the Geneva Gun club for many years, keeping books and doing other jobs for the club when he felt his best shooting days were over. Many of his good friends were these men. In 1978, Cecil and Mabel became snow birds and went south for the winter. Daughter, Delores Johnson and her husband, Gordon, drove them to McAllen, Tx., and returned for them each spring for 10 years. Many of the grandchildren accompanied them on these trips. During these years they made many close friends and thoroughly enjoyed the activities. Getting Grandpa and Grandma packed up and then unpacked again became an annual ritual for family members. Eventually the arthritis in Cecil’s knees kept him housebound and baseball games on radio and television became his passion, having been a fan all of his life. Grandpa, sitting in his increasingly threadbare recliner with his radio in his lap will be the memory probably most often remembered by grandchildren. Granddaughter, Diane Deepe, joined the household, becoming their helper and she could always tease a special twinkle into Grandpa’s eyes. Preceding Cecil in death were his parents; infant brother, brother, Harry; sister, Hazel Berge; two sons-in-law, Dean Deep and Gordon Johnson; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Deepe. Surviving him are Mabel, his wife of over 65 years; children, Delores Johnson, Alvin and Virginia Fox, and Dorothy and LaVern Novak; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Lucile Fox; and sister, Florence Nun; nieces and nephews; special friends, Mark, Becky and Derek Stamp, neighbors and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 27, with the Rev. Stanley Rider officiating. Ray and Margaret Nichols, accompanied by Mrs. Judy Ackland, sang “Precious Lord, take My Hand.” The congregational hymn was “What a Friend we have in Jesus.” Casket bearers were Robert J. Cellar, Charles H. Miller, Richard Maresch, Roger Pittard, Joe E. Schelkopf and William R. Watmore. Honorary bearers were Virgil Biegert, Derrel Hutchens, Frank K. Koahler and Vaden Myers.
