Cecil passed onto greater life on Sept. 16, 1999, at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln at the age of 96 years, 3 months and 28 days. Cecil’s entire life was spent in Fillmore county. He attended District No. 12 until eighth grade and graduated from Geneva High School in May of 1922. After graduation, he farmed with his father and brother, Glenn. While helping cut silage at a neighbor’s farm, a young lady caught his eye. They began dating, and on Aug. 12, 1925, he married Donna Tatro. To this union, two sons were born, Dean and Dale. Cecil was a true farmer who enjoyed raising livestock and crops. His life revolved around the activities of his farm and family. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church for over 70 years. He was also a member of the Methodist men, a charter-member of the Geneva Grange and Odd Fellows. Cecil was very involved in his children and grandchildren’s daily activities, sporting or school events were rarely missed regardless of the distance of travel or time involved in attending. Each grandchild’s activity was a special event and one that was eagerly anticipated. Life on the farm always remained a focal part of his life and he continued to help with farm activities whenever the chance provided itself. In later years, he particularly enjoyed his Sunday afternoon excursion around Fillmore county to see the farms. His home was always open to family and friends, and they were welcomed with gracious hospitality. After the tragic and untimely death of his brother and sister-in-law, he became an extended father to Glenn’s children. In 1947, Dorothy came to live and make her home with Cecil and Donna as a daughter, as did her sister Dolores. A special bond was formed with each as though they were each daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, Effie and Arthur Richards; brothers, Glenn and Jesse and wife, Donna. His greatest loss, that of his son, Dean, who died in a tragic accident in April of 1980, at the age of 51. Although there were many tragedies in his life, he upheld an optimistic attitude. He never knew a stranger and was known for his tendency to invite anyone in for coffee or dinner. He is survived by his son, Dale and wife, Virginia; and daughter-in-law, Doris Richards, widow of Dean. Also surviving are six grandchildren; Blaine Richards, Rodger Richards, Bill Richards, Dixie Richards Dresner, Audrey Richards, Jim Richards; 12 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Brian Kottas officiating. A eulogy was read by Bill and Jim Richards and Mrs. Susie Kleinschmidt provided music and accompanied the congregational singing of “Amazing Grace” and “It is Well with My Soul.” Pallbearers were Blaine Richards, Rodger Richards, Bill Richards, Jim Richards, Steven Dresner and Darlo Richards.
