Funeral services for Charles Ferneau, son of Walker and Sarah Mace Ferneau, were held Friday June 8, 1951, at 2:00 P.M. at Steffy's Funeral Home with Rev. D.E. Freeman officiating. Mrs. Vincent Johnson sang "Saved By Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross" and was accompanied by Mrs. Esther Moore. Casketbearers were Harold Duffus, Bert McKeag, Harry Duffus, Marvin Ferneau, Melvin Ferneau, and Alvin Foster. Interment was at the Masonic IOOF Cemetery. Charles Ferneau, oldest son of Walker and Sarah Mace Ferneau, was born in Poweshiek County, July 21, 1869, north of Malcom, and departed this life June 5, 1951, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 14 days. His entire life was spent in and near Montezuma. He was united in marriage with Nellie Pool and to this union were born 12 children, four babies having passed away in infancy. When living northeast of Montezuma, the entire family affiliated with the Fairmont Methodist Church. Beside the four infants, he was preceded in death by his wife and daughter Myrtle Duffus. He leaves to mourn his passing two daughters, Allie McKeag of Birmingham, Delia Beck of Mt. Pleasant; and five sons, Levi of Pleasantville, Cliff of Ottumwa, Herman of Oskaloosa, Harlan of Montezuma, Robert of Oskaloosa. Also two sisters, Mrs. Mae Stigers of Tama and Mrs Anna Harden of Montezuma; fourteen grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. In a rather strange occurrence, Charles, his brother Walker and his half-sister Harriet all died within twenty-four hours of one another.
