Ball. ---------------- The Fairfield Journal January 8, 1907 Pg. 2 Col. 3 WEDDED CHRISTMAS DAY. Charles Ball, of This City, and Miss Clara Hallay (sic), of Nevada. Quietly Wedded in Chicago. Charles Ball, of this city, and Miss Clara Hallay (sic), of Nevada, were quietly married in Chicago, Illinois, Dec. 25, 1906. Since that time the contracting parties have kept the wedding quiet. The young couple came immediately to this city where they received the congratulations of a very few friends to whom they announced their marriage. They will make their home in this city. The bride is one of Nevada's most accomplished young women and numbers her friends by the score in her home town. She has visited in this city a number of times and has already won many friends for her self. Mr. Ball is the son of Hon. George Ball, of this city, and has grown to manhood in this vicinity. He is well known all over the county as a young man of considerable business ability. Mrs. Ball is at present spending a few days at her home in Nevada. ---------------- Fairfield Daily Ledger Monday March 25, 1940 Pg. 1 Col. 4 SERVICES FOR CHARLES BALL HELD TODAY Passed away Saturday evening at the Jefferson county hospital Funeral services for Charles F. Ball, 66, who died at 8:52 p.m. Saturday evening at the Jefferson county hospital, were held at the Murray funeral home at 4 p.m. today. They were in charge of Rev. S. P. Williamson. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Ball had been suffering from a heart disease for about two months. During this time he had made his home with his sister Mrs. R. Day Hunt. He was taken to the Jefferson county hospital on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. Charles F. Ball, son of the late George W. and Margaret L. Ball, was born May 20th, 1874 in the Cross Lanes neighborhood about six miles west of Fairfield. With the exception of a few years during young manhood, at which time he was in college at Des Moines and later employed as a pharmacist in northern Iowa,his whole life was spent in this community. He passed away Saturday evening, March 23rd, at the Jefferson County Hospital. He is survived by one daughter, Nellie L. Ball, by three brothers, Joseph L. Ball, Harry I. Ball and W. N. Ball, and by one sister, Nellie Ball Hunt, all of whom live in Fairfield. For a number of years he operated a drug store in Fairfield and afterward was engaged in farming and stock handling in this vicinity. For several years past he was business manager of the Elks club in this city. He held various offices in this organization and was widely known among members of this lodge throughout Southeastern Iowa. About six months ago, he underwent a serious operation, and shortly thereafter he suffered a heart attack which made it necessary for him to give up his business activities. Since December he made his home with his sister, Mrs. Hunt, and it was there that he had a second attack last Friday evening which resulted in his death about twenty-four hours later. "Charley" Ball, as he was generally called, was well and favorably known throughout this town and the surrounding country where he has lived so long. His courteous manner and genial personality made a host of friends among those with whom he came in contact and he will be greatly missed in a wide circle of those who have been associated with him for so many years. ---------------- Note: the following biography information provided by Don Harper on November 15, 2016 for use on this memorial. Revised on November 23, 2016 with certain marriage/divorce date information: "Charles Francis Ball’s death certificate states he was born on 20 May 1874 in Fairfield, Jefferson Co., IA. He first appears in the 1880 Census, living in Fairfield with his parents, Geo. W. Ball, 32, born WV (actually VA) and Marget (sic) Ball, 29, born IA, and his siblings. He was still living with his parents when the 1885 and 1895 Iowa State Censuses were taken. By 1905, he had become a stock dealer. He was married on Dec. 25,1906 in Chicago, Illinois, to Clara H. Halley. In the 1910 Census, he was living in Fairfield with his wife, Clara E. Ball, who was 34 at the time. He was still listed as a stock dealer. The couple had a son who was born and died in 1911. They had a daughter, Nellie Lavina Ball who was born on 14 Feb 1914. He registered for the WW I draft in Fairfield on 12 Sep 1918, at the age of 44. He was a farmer, and listed his closest relative as Clara E. Ball. They were living at 309 E. Kirkwood. In the 1920 Census, Charles was living at East Lowe in Fairfield. He was listed as married, but his wife is not in the census (sic. they were legally divorced on September 8, 1920, so likely separated at the time the census was taken). He was a farmer. In the 1925 Iowa State Census, he was divorced and a roomer at 103a, North Court, Fairfield, and was still at the same address in the 1930 Census. He continued his farming occupation. Charles Francis Ball, 65, died in the Jefferson County Hospital on 23 Mar 1940 of a coronary thrombosis. He had been in hospital only 1 day. His death certificate says he was divorced and widowed. At the time of death, he had been living at 800 South Main Street in Fairfield. His occupation was Business Manager of the Elks Club in Fairfield. His parents were listed as Geo. W. Ball, born WV (actually VA) and Margaret Laughlin, born Brookville, IA. He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery on 25 Mar 1940."
