Patterson, Sr, an old and respected citizen of Maquoketa township since 1856 and one of that townships prosperous and progressive farmers, passed quietly away at the old home three and one-half miles northwest of this city Tuesday evening at 9 o'clock. Charles Hamilton Patterson was born in Courtland (Cortland) county, New York, June 22, 1825, and came to Jackson county, where he has since resided in 1856. In 1847 he was married to Miss Lethea Barker, who died June 20, 1857. July 4, 1858, he was married to Lorinda Pate, with whom he has lived happily ever since, and who, with seven grown children, survive to morn his loss. The children are Charles H., Jesse, Elmer, William, Archie, Nellie and Viola. All were with him during his last days. Mr. Patterson was a staunch and consistent Democrat, taking much interest in politics and did what he earnestly believed to be right, never stooping to underhand trickery. He has held the office of township trustee and other minor offices and always fulfilled his duty well. The funeral was held this morning at 10 o'clock at the late home, Rev. W. C. Macurdy of the M. E. church preaching the sermon. The attendance was large, many from this city being present. Interment took place in the cemetery at Bridgeport." Charles Patterson was a "pioneer" of Jackson Co, IA. He belonged to The Maquoketa Valley Pioneer and Old Settlers' Society. To be a member as an old settler, one had to have lived in the state thirty years. To be a pioneer, one had to have come to the state prior to December 31, 1852.
