Hubbard Daugherty, who died suddenly in the McCready Hospital Saturday evening of last week. He was 77 years of age. Mr. Daugherty had been a patient in the hospital for only a few days, and on the preceding Friday had undergone an operation there. He apparently was making a fine recovery when a coronary occlusion occurred, causing his death. He was the son of the late Charles O. and Maggie Dize Daugherty, and the husband of Mrs. Mary Somers Daugherty. While many people knew him by his name, Hubbard, most people recognized him better by his nickname "Pluck," given him early in life in recognition of his courage in tackling business and other problems and solving them. It often has been said that there was only one man in the community like him—he himself. Certainly he had a wide, wide acquaintance both in the community and outside of it. He was jovial; he was interested in his fellow men; he was a friend who could be relied on through thick and thin; he traveled a great deal, and made friends wherever he went. He had something in his makeup that caused people to instinctively like him; he repaid favors with favors. In his younger days, as a teenager, he started the business of repairing bicycles; later, he built and managed a hotel here; for many years he was engaged in the soft drink business, located in his own building on the south side of Main street, which he built following the fire that wiped out the central city business district. At the time of his death he was operating a retail clothing and furniture business, with his son, Clinton Daugherty. Mr. Daugherty was a shrewd and successful business man, with a legion of warm friends who were deeply affected by his sudden death. A member of Crisfield Lodge No. 1044, B.P.O. Elks, the following fellow members were bearers at the funeral: Kenneth (Jo-Jo) Tawes, William Hall, Ringgold Sterling, Wilbert J. Coulbourn, James Dryden, Harvey Dize, Harry T. Phoebus, Jr., and Carlton Drewer. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. A. B. Frye of Salisbury, former pastor of Immanuel Methodist Church here, assisted by the Rev. Ray Chamberlain, pastor of the Crisfield Gospel Center, and the Rev. H. M. Hunt, former pastor of the Crisfield Church of God. Burial was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park. Graveside services were conducted by the Crisfield Lodge of Elks. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Mary Somers Daugherty, and one son, Clinton Daugherty, both of Crisfield.
