Daugherty, custodian of the Crisfield Fire Department's building and equipment, died at the University Hospital in Baltimore Tuesday morning from a complication of diseases. He was 44 years of age. He was the son of Mrs. Margaret F. Daugherty and the late Charles 0. Daugherty, and had resided at the Daugherty home on Pine street all his life. Mr. Daugherty had a wide acquaintance in his community. More than that, he had hundreds of friends who called him by his first name and held him in high regard. An employee of the City of Crisfield for years, connected with the police department, the street department, and finally some months back being appointed custodian of the Firemen's Hall on Broadway, he took great pride in his duties and performed them in an efficient and highly satisfactory manner. Since being placed in charge of the firefighting equipment and building he had worked hard to renovate the building and to put the equipment in first class condition and keep it that way. The result was a wonderful improvement in both building and equipment. In performing his duties Mr. Daugherty was uniformly courteous and capable. He liked to be of service to the public and went out of his way to do favors for the people of the community, irrespective of their station in life. Friendly himself, his personality and willingness to help others in every way, day or night, gained for him the friendship and the esteem of his fellow citizens. Mr. Daugherty was a member of the Elk's Lodge, he took part in many civic undertakings, but his great love was for the fire department, of which he had been a member for many years, and his efficiency there was generally recognized and highly valued. While he had not been well for some months past, it was not realized that his condition was really serious until within the past few weeks, when everything that medical skill could do to save his life was done, but disease had made such progress that death finally came on Tuesday. Funeral services were held at his home on Pine street yesterday, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, and were attended by a large number of his relatives and friends whose grief at his passing was marked. Dr. Melvin E. Wheatley, pastor of the church Mr. Daugherty attended, conducted the services. Interment was in the family lot in the Crisfield cemetery, with members of the Crisfield Fire Department acting as pallbearers and officers and members of the Elk's Lodge as honorary pallbearers. The variety and beauty of the floral pieces sent to honor him attested to the unusual esteem and regard in which he was generally held. He is survived by his mother, and two brothers, Mr. C. Hubbard Daugherty and Mr. G. Carlisle Daugherty all of this city. The Crisfield Times, June 16, 1944 pg. 1 & 8
