Hoover was born on August 20, 1843 at Byron, Ill., and departed this life at Narka, Kansas, May 10, 1935 at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 20 days. He grew to young manhood near Byron, Ill., Being the eldest in the family, upon his shoulders rested the responsibility of caring for his mother and younger brothers and sisters. Grandpa Hoover expressed his belief in the Great Architect of the Universe while a mere boy and always practiced the Golden Rule in all relations with mankind. When Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers Mr. Hoover enlisted to fight for the cause for which he was for over 61 years privileged to enjoy. He enlisted in Company I-140th Illinois infantry April 26, 1864, and was honorably discharged Oct. 29, 1864. On September 4, 1867 he was happily married to Harriett J. Hoskins. To this union was born six children, one daughter, who died in infancy; Mrs. Ada Leffingwell, who departed this life Oct. 14, 1925; two sons, Loren and Clye of Narka; and Mrs. Dora Harlan of Columbus, Nebraska, who together with 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, three half-sisters, relatives, and a host of friends, mourn his timely parting. He and his wife homesteaded in Republic county in May, 1870, where they lived and reared their family. His dear wife preceded him in death June 24, 1918 and since then he has made his home with his sons and daughters. With the passing of this father, soldier and friend, this community loses one of its noblest citizens whose life and time--honored examples the youth of today might well follow.
