Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on July 2, 1918, Charles was the son of John Wesley and Olive Mae (Orman) Lunkley. On May 1, 1939, he married his loving bride, Rozella Welsh, and they shared 67 years together before preceding him in death on February 23, 2007. Charles received his B.A. degree from McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas, and went on to receive his M.Div. degree from Bethany Theological Seminary. He was ordained to ministry in the Church of the Brethren in 1942. Following his pastorate in Prairie City, Iowa, from 1946-1950, the Lord led Charles and Rozella into missionary service in Nigeria, West Africa, where they served from 1950-1962. During this time, Charles worked in the churches, translated Sunday school materials, and headed a medical dispensary among other tasks. Following their missionary service, Charles was Director of Interpretation at American Leprosy Mission (New York City) from 1969-1970, Pastor of Church of the Brethren in Huntington from 1970-1977, District Secretary of Church of the Brethren in Northern Plains and Missouri from 1977-1984, Chaplain of Timbercrest Church of the Brethren Home, Inc., in North Manchester from 1984-1987, and Chaplain of Suite Living Retirement Home in Marion in his later years. He had also pastored in Alabama earlier in his ministry. Charles was always an active learner and had a passion to seek knowledge, even later in life. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed singing. Survivors include his daughter, Carolyn (Hardey) McDaniel, Marion; son, James (Judith) Lunkley, Moulton, IA; brother, John Lunkley, Rio Rancho, NM; grandchildren: Jeannie (Eric) Walts, Marion; James (Lori) McDaniel, Kokomo; and Christopher (Candi) McDaniel, Kokomo; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Emily, Rachel, Audrey (Lane), James, Jonathan, Spencer, and Jada; god-son, Daniel Dabil; and great-great-grandson, Elijah. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Clyde Lunkley, and his sister, June Marnholtz. The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN. A funeral service to celebrate Charles’ life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 22, 2019, at Church of the Brethren, 2302 S. Geneva Ave., Marion, IN. Rev. Robin Wentworth Mayer will be officiating with burial following at Jefferson Cemetery.
