Written by her daughter Edith This is the history of Charlotte Hartland Wadholm & her family. Charlotte was the oldest daughter of Peder & Jensine Hartland. They came from Hjartland, Helgeland, Norway. Peder was born Jan 11, 1857 & died Aug. 17, 1921 & is buried at Van Hook, No. Dak. Jensine was born Sept 12, 1864 & died Oct. 3, 1933 & is buried at Van Hook, No. Dak. Charlotte's parents names were different in Norway. First it was Elling or Eling, then Malling or Maling then Pedersen. When they came to the U.S. they changed their name to Hartland, which was the name of the town that Jensine was from except it was spelled Hjartland. Charlotte & her sister Petra & two brothers Fred & Paul & Charlotte's daughter Marie who was 8 months old when they came to the U.S. were all born in Norway. Charlotte & her family came to the U.S. by boat in April of 1909, it took 2 wks to cross the ocean. They came to Breckenridge, Minn. by train & were met at the depot by Peder M. Hartland, Jensine's husband & a cousin Remman. They then moved to Clare City, So. Dak. Charlotte was raped by a man when she went to the well to get water. Charlotte became pregnant as a result of this rape. A daughter Barbara Sophia was born Aug. 1910, she was taken to Fargo, No. Dak. by her aunt Petra to be given up for adoption. Charlotte met her future husband Tobias (Thomas) Wadholm, who came from near Stavanger, Norway. Thomas' name in Norway was Larssen. When he came to the U.S. he took the name Wadholm from the 2 houses called Vaholmen in the city of Skudeneshavn where Thomas was from. Charlotte & Thomas were married in 1911 at Sisseton, S.D. They made their home at Veblen, So. Dak. While they lived at Veblen, 4 daughters were born to them. Dena Louise born June 7th, 1912. Lorena born Jan 24th, 1914. Myrtle born April 12th, 1915. Grethe Sophia born Oct 4th, 1916. Thomas & his brothers came to Van Hook, No. Dak. in 1916 & secured a homestead, which is 1 mile east & 1/2 mile north of what is now called New Town, N.D. He then returned to Veblen, So. Dak. & shipped his livestock by train to No. Dak. Charlotte & her 4 daughters came in July of 1917 by train to the new home. Thomas by then had built a 3 room house. Charlotte & Thomas raised livestock & grain. On July 4, 1919 a son was finally born to Charlotte & Thomas & was named Theodore Paul. On Nov. 12, 1925 a daughter Edith Joyce was born & another daughter Mavis Julia was born April 18, 1931. Thomas died Oct. 20, 1935 of stomach cancer. Charlotte continued to live on the homestead with the help of her children & brother in laws James & Andrew Wadholm. In 1941 Charlotte & her 2 daughters Edith & Mavis moved into Van Hook, buying a house that is now under Lake Sakakawea. Charlotte washed dishes in a cafe that was owned by the Brodahls. It was eventually sold to the Berglands & Charlotte continued washing dishes for them. Charlotte also helped Mrs. Bergland with the baking. Another job she had was babysitting for Marvin Sevalsons. This was to supplement her income because she had 2 under age children. After her daughter Edith married & moved to Calif., she took her job helping in the kitchen for the Jack Smiths. After Edith had lived in Calif. a while, she sent money for Charlotte & Mavis to come visit. Edith returned to No. Dak. with Charlotte & Mavis as her husband was in the service. Edith then lived at home & helped her mother, so she didn't have to work anymore except odd babysitting jobs. When Edith moved to her own home Mavis was then old enough to help supplement her mothers income. In 1949 Charlotte moved in with her daughter Edith & continued to live there until her death March 28, 1958. In 1956 Charlotte & her daughter Edith & grandsons. Bill, Tom, & Terry went to Charlotte's birth place in Norway. She was gone 2 months. They went by boat & it took 8 days to cross the ocean. Charlotte had wanted to go back to Norway for many years. In 1953 she discovered she had sugar diabeties, she then figured she had lost all hope of ever returning to her homeland, but things got better for her & she got to see her homeland before she died. One thing she commented on when she returned from Norway was that it seems so small compared to what she remembered it being & that everything was just the same as when whe first left Norway 47 years before. They were still drying the hay the same, hauled it the same with 1 horse, 1 cold water spigot in the houses coming from the springs in the mountain. Norway had electricity when she came in the U.S. & for many years later people didn't have electricity. While Charlotte was in Norway she wanted to go up on top of this hill where she had herded cattle when she was a child. So, she & her daughter & grandsons climbed this hill & Charlotte had taken a tea kettle along so she could cook coffee. Her comment was "The hill & the trees are so much bigger".
