Norton, a long an honored resident of Iowa county, died at his home in Marengo, last Thursday afternoon, after an illness of 10 months due to valvular heart trouble. He was over 63 years old. He was one of four brothers, sons of John D. and Harriet King Norton. These were New York people who, with a company of friends and relatives, came first to Illinois and later to Green township in 1867. One brother died in infancy. The oldest brother James Norton resides in Ladora, and the youngest, Wm. Norton is superintendent of the county home in Washington county. On September 14, 1886, Mr. Norton was married to Miss Rosanah. They engaged in farming for a few years in Green township, and in 1892 moved to Marengo where Mr. Norton has since worked most of the time at his trade, carpentering. For a few brief periods he helped Marengo merchants in their business, and on two occasions lived in South Dakota, principally for health advantages. Through the years, however, he has been known as a competant and reliable carpter of Marengo and Iowa county. In an old fashioned revival meeting in 1887 he and his wife were converted to the Christian life. They united at once with the Methodist Episcopal church at Champion Hill, and on moving to Marengo a little later their membership was transferred to the Methodist Episcopal church here, with which congregation they have since been identified. As well as an outstanding churchman, Mr. Norton was known as a prominent member of the order of the I.O.O.F. He has had all the honors his local lodge could bestow and has had all the degrees which the order confers. He leaves his beloved companion of these 43 years, and only son, Charles M.J. Norton and wife of Chicago, IL., also two brothers; a vast multitude of friends. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist church, Sunday at 2 p.m. by the pastor, the Rev. P. M. Conant. The Rev. C. R. Zimmerman, a personal friend since early youth, spoke in appreciation of his Christian character and manhood, and preached from the test, "If a man die shall he live gain." Their ritual was observed by the I.O.O.F. at the church. Interment was made in the family lot in the Victor cemetery.
