He was born June 22, 1913 in Chelan to pioneers, Nellie Vernetta (Pruett) Green and Royer Lincoln Green. As a youth, Chet constructed wooden apple boxes for a nickel a box, skied the Chelan Butte, and frequented the horse races on Wapato Point. He played on the Chelan High school basketball team and was featured in the role of Hop Sing Hi in a 1928 performance of the operetta, Once in a Blue Moon at the Ruby Theater in Chelan. Many of his summers were spent hiking and prospecting with friends in the Horseshoe Basin area of the North Cascades. He graduated from Chelan High School in 1931, and attended Washington State College where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the college band. He was awarded a degree in pharmacy in 1935. He and his sister Esther opened Green's Drug Store, July 4, 1937. "We hadn't intended to open the store on the Fourth of July, but it got so hot we opened the doors, and the people started coming in." Shortly after Pearl Harbor, Chet enlisted in the Navy and as Chief Pharmacist Mate aboard an LST, he fought in the Mediterranean Theatre and participated in the landings at Anzio and Salerno and the D-Day invasion of Normandy. After the war, he returned to Chelan to Green's Drug, which he and Esther operated until 1984 when they sold the business to Aldon and Nancy Oscarson. He was one of the founders of the Lake Chelan Community Golf Course and a lifelong member of the Rotary Club. He is survived by wife Ruby; daughter, Gretchen Freeman; sons, Jerry, Mickey and James; five grandchildren, Jenna Tyson, Brooke Freeman, Roy Green, William Green and Jamalyn Green; nephew, Wilbur Green; and cousin, Lorraine Hulse. Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, June 28, 10:30 a.m. at the Chelan Methodist Church. Memorials are preferred to Lake Chelan Community Hospital. A special thanks is extended to the staff at Highline Convalescent Center and to Jason McCauley for their kindness.
