Sass Dates on Tombstone = 13 Sept. 1911 - 12 Aug. 1928 Parents = Christian M. & Anna ( Meyer) Sass Obituary The Hooper Sentinel August 16, 1928 Chris Sass Fatally hurt in Auto Accident Sunday This community and especially the one northwest of Hooper, was greatly shocked Sunday evening when word was heard of the death of Chris Sass, 16-year old son of Mrs. Anna Sass of about seven miles northwest of town, as the result of injuries received in an auto accident near West Point in the morning. The accident happened three miles west of West Point and occurred as young Sass and Walter Langemeier, a neighbor boy, were returning from a visit over Saturday at Beemer. On reaching this spot in the road, the Ford Touring car, with Langemeier driving, struck some loose gravel which caused the car to skid and to overturn, the two boys being pinned underneath the wreckage. Langemeier was able to extricate himself and then put forth his efforts to getting out young Sass in which he was assisted by passing motorists. Sass was taken immediately to a West Point hospital where it was found he had suffered a broken leg and serious internal injuries. He lingered until evening when death came to him with members of the family at his bedside. Young Langemier escaped with a bruised leg and a few other contusions about the body, and is now about recovered from his experience. The car was completely wrecked. The Bucholz Bros. ambulance was summoned and driven to West Point the same evening to bring the body back to Hooper for preparal for the funeral. This was held Tuesday afternoon, with short services first at the Sass farm home and then at the St. Johns Lutheran church, the pastor, Rev. Theo. Norden conducting them, and who took his German text from Isaiah 45:15 and the English text from Luke 7:11-17. A very large number of people attended the services and followed the remains to the final resting place in the church cemetery. Pall bearers were Avillus Kroeger, Henry Lueking, Howard Uehling, Arnold Langemeier, Roland Rink and Leonard Schulenberg. Chris Sass was born on the home place northwest of Hooper on September 13, 1911, and had thus but attained the age of 16 years, 10 months and 29 days. He was a bright and industrious lad, one who was very well liked by all and always took an active part in the affairs of the young people of his community and was a faithful member of the Young Peoples Society of St. Johns church. He had spent all his life on the farm and in recent years had been a big help to his mother in the conduct of the farm. That he should be called at this time in life is indeed sad, and the members of the stricken family have the sincerest sympathy of the entire community. His tragic death is mourned by his mother, one sister, Anna and four brothers, Harold, Norman, Werner and Roland.
