He was born in Sweden Feb. 26, 1855 and died Feb. 22, 1937 at the Lutheran hospital at Fort Dodge, Iowa, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 22 days. In 1857, he came to this country with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gabrielson. Landing in Boston, Mass., the Gabrielsons went directly to Chicago and then to Galesburg, Ill. In 1858 the family, together with the Ekstrand family, came to Dayton, crossing the prairies in covered wagons. Dayton at that time was a small settlement of log cabins. In his early boyhood and in the winters, until he was twenty-one, Mr. Gabrielson attended the Leonard district school north of town, which was also built of logs. During the summers from the time he was ten years of age, he was employed in some form of useful work. His first work was for Eli Geyer driving a horse used in operating a turning lathe making broom handles, for which he was paid ten cents a day. This was in 1865 while his father was in the Civil War with Sherman on his march to the sea. His mother used part of the money to buy stamps for the letters both to and from Sweden. Mr. Gabrielson spent several years in farm work helping his father and other farmers break the virgin sod and build homes. Two years were spent in railroading, working on both the Northwestern and Minneapolis & St. Louis, as the tracks were laid into Dayton. On June 22, 1882, he was united in marriage to Clara M. Nelson, and they settled on the farm west of town which they had purchased and where they lived until they retired from active farming and moved into Dayton in 1918. They lived in Dayton until the death of Mrs. Gabrielson in November, 1935. After her death Mr. Gabrielson made his home with his daughter Amy Bloom. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Gabrielson eight children were born, two Carl Oscar and Vina dying in infancy and Verner E. who died in 1932. Surviving are two sons and three daughters, Van A. of Dayton; Victor I. of Harcourt; Hattie Lidvall of Boxholm; Amy Bloom of Dayton and Callie Payn of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Betty Gabrielson, Robert Lidvall, John Lidvall and Dewey Payn; one brother, Victor of Des Moines and one sister, Mrs. Mary Shold of Albert Lea, Minn. Mr. Gabrielson was a member of the Lutheran Church. Funeral services in charge of his pastor, Rev. Ekeberg, were conducted from the home in Dayton Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 24. A quartette from the church sang the same songs they sang for Mrs. Gabrielson's funeral services. Those who acted as pall bearers were A.L. Holmstrom, Chas. Forslund, Will Forsberg, Frank Green, Albert Bloomquist and Oscar Ehen. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Dayton cemetery. Mr. Gabrielson was always interesed in community affairs and served efficiently for several years as township assessor, road commissioner and school director. He was upright in all his dealings and had a practical insight into problems of the day which brought neighbors and friends to him for advice and encouragement. Death has brought to a close a useful and worthy life but it leaves an enviable place not only in the hearts of his children but in the memory of all with whom he came in contact during his many years in the community. Gabrielson were Mrs. Mary Shold and Carl Shold from Albert Lea, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Victor Gabrielson, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gabrielson and children of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. L.
