The second Dickinson county highway fatality of the year took the life of Clifford Stammer, 24, of Spirit Lake, about 4 o'clock Sunday morning. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Stammer who live north, of Spirit Lake, a veteran of four years' marine service. He was the nephew of M. M. Jones, a member of the county board of supervisors. A brother was killed in service. Stammer was attending junior college and residing in Estherville with his wife and baby. They, together with four brothers and four sisters, survive. Stammer --held a Purple Heart and a Presidential Citation for his war service in the Pacific area. The accident occurred shortly alter 3 a. m. when Stammer stopped his car on Highway 9 to inspect the radiator. Riding' with him were Mr. and Mrs. Dale Richards of Estherville. Stammer noticed his radiator steaming and stopped on the highway to find the trouble if possible. Those riding with him cautioned him to pull onto the shoulder but he is said to have replied that another motorist would see his lights and stop to give aid or pull around him. According to Patrolman Marvin Grebe of Estherville, a car driven by Kenneth Dally of Estherville came from behind as Stammer was out of the car. The' Dally car struck the Stammer car from behind, pushing the car forward onto Stammer, His chest was badly crushed and he was hurried to the Holy Family hospital in Estherville where it was found' he was dead upon arrival. Also injured m the accident were Glen Bradshaw of Estherville, riding with Dally, who had facial cuts, and Dally, bruised and cut on the hands and knees. Neither Mr. or Mrs. Richards was injured. The men were hospitalized. Stammer-was born in Estherville July 5, 1923. He was a graduate of Lakefield high school. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon.
