Jordan, of Wood, passed away Monday, January 7, at a hospital in Pierre, S. Dak., where he was taken for surgical treatment. He was buried at Wood Tuesday afternoon. Col. Jordan, as he was known over the west, was born in New York State and was 74 years of age. He migrated to the west early in life and was interested in many activities in the early history of South Dakota. He was a cousin of General Custer, who was killed in battle with a band of Indian warriors. He assisted Buffalo Bill to organize his first Wild West Show, and the friendship existing between them remained to the end of their days. About 45 years ago Col. Jordan planted an apple orchard on his ranch south of Wood, which bore fruit abundantly and was one of the real show places of the Rosebud. For many years he was chief clerk at the Rosebud Agency, which position he filled with credit until he resigned. He organized the Jordan Mercantile Company, with stores at several Indian stations over the Rosebud. At the age of 61, he cast his first vote in Mellette County, at the time of organization, and was elected the first county treasurer of that county. The last few years his health has been failing, and he spent part of each year at the soldier's home at Hot Springs, S. Dak. Several children survive him, his wife having died a few years ago. C.P. Jordan, perhaps one of the most prominent frontiersman of this reservation had passed away at the hospital at Pierre, South Dakota, early that morning. Death was directly due to cancer of the intestines. The deceased was aged 72 years, 7 months and 18 days at the time of his death. Charles Philander Jordan was born at Piqua, Ohio, on May 12, 1851 and was the youngest of a family of twelve children, having eight brothers and three sisters. At the age of eleven years he enlisted as drummer boy with the 11th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the year 1860 and served in a like capacity in the 110th and 94th Volunteer infantry. At the age of 21 years, in the fall of 1872, he came to South Dakota, being appointed to the position of quartermaster clerk at the mouth of Cedar Creek, south of old Fort George, in which capacity he served his country faithfully and well. In the spring of 1873 he was transferred to Camp Robinson at the Pine Ridge Reservation and he remained there until the summer of 1879, when he was transferred to the mouth of Landing Creek at the Spotted Tail warehouses, where he was chief issue clerk until the year 1882 when he was appointed Post Trader at Rosebud Agency. For a number of years he conducted a very successful trading post, and owned and operated a large store at the Agency, and also at Butte Creek, now Wood. On December 11, 1878, he was united in marriage to Julia Walks First, one of the prominent and respected Indian maidens of that time. To this union nine children were born: Charles Collins, Edwin Evard, William Ward, Mary Julia, John David, David Jefferson, Evard Cody, Collins Custer and Ella Adeline. But three of these children survive him, William Ward Jordan now living at Rosebud Agency, Mary Julia who is now Mrs. Alex Bordeaux, Jr., of White River, and Evard Cody, who lived at Wood. Charles P. Jordan was made a member of Minnchaduza Lodge No. 192 A.F. & A.M. at Valentine, Nebraska, March 12, 1901, and on March 18, 1901, he was made a member of Oriental Consistory No. 1, at Yankton, South Dakota, and of which lodges he was a member at the time of his death,. The deceased came from a very prominent family and his ancestors came over in the Mayflower, and America never fought a war of any kind but what some his ancestors or his immediate relatives participated in the conflict. He was intensely patriotic, and his work here among the Indians of the Sioux tribe, beginning as early as 1872, will live in history. He had considerable to do with bringing about the several treaties made by the government with the Sioux tribe. He was ever a friend of the Indian and was always working and laboring to improve the condition of the Indian. He was personally acquainted with practically all of the great Indian scout and frontiersmen, and counted many of these sturdy pioneers among his warmest friends. In 1895 Col. Jordan was given an exclusive concession at the Atlanta Cotton States International Exposition and he organized and conducted an American Indian village, taking with him a number of the Indians from this reservation. We believe he also took this big show to the Pacific coast, showing at San Francisco the following year. Some twenty-five or thirty years ago Col. Jordan began to build him a home on what is known as Orchard Ranch, about three miles south of Wood on Butte Creek. He built a fine home which he called home up to the time of his death. He set out the first orchard ever put out in what is now Mellette county, and this apple orchard today is one of the show places of the county and he demonstrated years ago that fruit could be successfully grown in this section. Col. Jordan, during his life on this reservation, succeeded in gathering together one of the most remarkable and valuable collection of Indian beadwork in existence. This collection is still intact and its value cannot be computed in dollars and cents as real Indian beadwork is becoming scarcer and very hard to obtain. His wife considered one of the most expert bead workers and the collection contains many pieces of her hand work. At the organization of Mellette County Mr. Jordan was honored by the voters by being elected as the first county treasurer of Mellette county and he filled this post with honor and credit. For the past ten or fifteen years he has been living quietly at his Orchard Ranch home and while he was a successful Indian trader and amassed a fortune, yet through his sympathy for his fellow man and his Indian friends his ready funds soon disappeared and for the past few years the Colonel, while not in want, died a poor man. All who knew him were his friends and would do anything within their power to help the Colonel any time. The funeral services were held at the Episcopal church, south of Wood, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Frazier of Winner preached the funeral sermon, and the services were conducted by Wood and White River Masonic lodges and the body was laid to rest in the Episcopal cemetery here beside that of his beloved wife and his sons and daughter, who preceded him to their eternal home, by his Masonic brethren with their beautiful burial ceremony. The casket was completely covered with flowers, tributes of friends to the memory of a sturdy frontiersman and a faithful and trusted friend who fought a good fight."
