The hundreds of Indians on this reservation, as well as the large host of friends of the Indians among the white race, and the Christian advocates of this and other reservations will be sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. C.P. Jordan, who has been known for the last thirty years as a devoted Christian woman and member of the Episcopal church, as well as a devoted and faithful mother, always very liberal in her donations to the church, as well as tribal enterprises, in fact she was a philanthropist. Mrs. Jordan died at her home, 'The Orchard Ranch' four and a half miles south of Wood, S.D., on the 5th of January 1913, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Jordan was 54 years old. She married C.P. Jordan when 20, the marriage ceremony being performed at the Pine Ridge Agency, S.D., in 1879. Her Indian name was 'Winyan hoaka' meaning in English the original woman or true woman. To this union ten children were born. Four boys and two girls survive her. William the oldest son is married, Mary, the oldest daughter is married to Alexander Bordeaux, Jr. Three boys and one girl, the youngest of the family aged 15, are still single. John is the Deputy Treasurer of Mellette County. All the children are pretty well educated, most of them having attended high school. While Mrs. Jordan will be long remembered by the Indians as a true friend and hospitable hostess; as a faithful wife and loving mother, she will also be remembered because of her strong influence and character which she utilized for the betterment of her people. She was a consistent worker in Women Sewing Societies, always doing more than her share in the work, and furnishing material. By her progressiveness and virtues she was always recognized as a leader and was continually elected as president of such organizations. She was an artist in Indian beadwork, her work in this line being highly prized by the Indians as well as among the whites. Her passing away will be mourned as a personal loss by hundreds throughout the Indian country as well as thousand in other walks of life. Mr. Shaw says Mrs. Jordan passed away very quietly, conscious to the last minutes. The sympathy of the community is strong for the bereaved husband and children. The funeral was directed by Rev. Dallas Shaw of Wood, S.D., and the services were conducted by Rev. Baptiste Lamber of Oak Creek, S.D. Both spoke long and well of her life, and her example of piousness and virtue, which may be considered by women in all stages of society. The remains were laid to rest in the Episcopal Cemetery southwest of Wood Monday."
