The community was somewhat shocked last Friday when the news came to town of the death of John Jordan, son of Col. C.P. Jordan, which occurred at the family home, 'Orchard Ranch' south of town, Friday morning, March 20, 1914 at 10:30 o'clock. John Jordan was born at Rosebud Agency September 26, 1888, and was therefore, aged 25 years, five months and 24 days at the time of his death. He was educated at Omaha, Nebraska, and was a very studious young man and was exceptionally well read along scientific and religious lines. His ambition in life was to be an expert bookkeeper and account and this ambition he realized to a large extent before his untimely death. He acted as deputy county treasurer for his father and performed the manifold duties of that office with credit, and that too without the assistance of outside help except at short intervals when the rush of work made it absolutely necessary. The State Accountant who was at White River some time last fall going over the books of the various county officers, after going over the Treasurer's books made this remark: "John Jordan has at times performed the work of three men.' He was very neat in his work and accurate. He was always a good boy and young man and never had an evil thought or a bad habit and no 'sporty' inclinations. The Bible and the Howard classics were among his favorite literature and he studied these diligently. He was also a great lover of music and became quite proficient in that art. Having unbounded faith in immortality and a belief as to his final destination, which has proved such a great comfort to him in his long lingering illness, he passed away very peacefully. He has for some time been afflicted with the great white plague and up until last fall when he grew so much worse, he performed the duties of county treasurer. He wen to Omaha with his father last fall with the hope of getting some relief and prolonging his life, but the doctors there gave him but little hope, so he returned to his old home with his father, who has been his constant attendant for the past several months. The funeral was held Sunday at the Episcopal church and was largely attended, and the remains were laid to rest in the Episcopal cemetery south west of town, beside those of his mother who passed away last year. The deceased was a credit to his race and those who knew him were his friend. He leaves a grief stricken father, three brothers and two sisters to mourn his untimely death, and the entire community extends their sincerest sympathy in their hour of sorrow."
