Description	:	Christopher "Columbus" Anderton was born December 28, 1841, in Mathews County, where he spent his entire childhood. His parents were Benjamin Anderton (1804-1894) and Elizabeth Davis (1820-1893). At the age of 18, he was an apprentice to his father, learning the trade of house carpentry. Read More	Christopher "Columbus" Anderton was born December 28, 1841, in Mathews County, where he spent his entire childhood. His parents were Benjamin Anderton (1804-1894) and Elizabeth Davis (1820-1893). At the age of 18, he was an apprentice to his father, learning the trade of house carpentry. According to military records in the National Archives, he enlisted in the Confederate Army on July 18, 1861, and was assigned to Stark's Battalion, Capt. Armistead's Company, Light Artillery. According to his son, Harry, he was the soldier who "aimed the gun". His brother, Ringold, was in the same company and they were both present at General Lee's Surrender at Appamattox Court House, taken prisoner of war and paroled on April 10, 1865. By this time Columbus had attained the rank of corporal. After the Civil War, Columbus returned home to live with his parents and took up farming. On March 24, 1873, he married Lucy Alice Gayle (1848-1917) of Ware Neck, in Gloucester County – the youngest daughter of Zelotes Gayle and Eliza Ann White. In a letter to Lucy, written by a good friend, she is teased about Columbus, or "Tip" as he was nicknamed: "Lucie, you ought to have been with us last Sunday. We had a gay time. Tip and Tom were with us. Lucie, I certainly think Mr. Anderton is one of the nicest gentlemen I ever saw. I tease him about you so much. Well, I can't help thinking he loves you. He does two (Sic.). He was sticking up to India Sunday. I tell her she has cut you out, but don't you believe that, Lucie. He will never forsake you for anyone else". After their marriage, Columbus and Lucy lived in Ware Neck with her father, Zelotes, Lucy's two older sisters, Louisa and Mary, and Zelotes's sister, Eliza. Lucy's mother had died in 1866. Even though Columbus had a nickname, "Tip" (his grandchildren called him "Paw Tip"), Lucy always referred to him in her letters as "Mr. A". They continued to live in Ware Neck until 1884 when they moved to White's Neck in Mathews County, presumably because Columbus was having a hard time making a living in Gloucester. By this time, he had added oystering to his many skills, and this, along with farming, made for happier times in Mathews. By 1885, they moved once again, this time to a house which Columbus built himself on land he later inherited from his Uncle Army (Armistead Davis, Jr. – his mother's brother), which was apparently very near his parents, Benjamin and Elizabeth. This land bordered on Diggs Creek, which is an inlet of North River. According to Lucy, this neighborhood was much friendlier than the one in White's Neck, near Mobjack. Their three older children, Bernard, Harry and Dora, had been born in Ware Neck and made these moves with them, along with Lucy's sister Louisa and aunt, Eliza Gayle. The other sister, Mary Gayle, had married Silas Chandler in 1881 and was living in Urbana, Virginia in Middlesex County. Father-in-law Zelotes had died in 1878. Columbus and Lucy had two other sons, Roland (my grandfather) and Stanley, both born in Mathews County. The family attended Emmanuel Methodist Church, near Bohannon Post Office, at the junction of North River Road and East River Road. Presumably, Columbus was not in the best of health, which may have contributed to their hard times. According to Lucy's letters to her sister, Mary, he was quite often stricken with the "chills". In fact, she states in a letter in 1881 that "Mr. A. is still having chills, had one last night. I am all most ready to despair of his ever getting well. I feel sometimes like I will surely go crazy for if he keeps like this I don't know what will become of us." I wonder if he might have contracted malaria while fighting in the Civil War? In later years, he also had trouble with his legs – "rheumatism and an ulcerated leg caused by wounds during the war" . He did live a long, full life despite these afflictions, and died of angina pectoris on September 9, 1914 at the age of 72. Lucy died in 1917. They are buried together at Providence Cemetery in Mathews. There is a confederate marker placed on Columbus's grave. His obituary in the Mathews Journal stated that Columbus "was a plain and unassuming but substantial citizen and a thoroughly good man."
