Description	:	Stanley Gayle Anderton -- born January 19, 1892, the fouth son and fifth child to Columbus and Lucy Gayle Anderton. Stanley (called "Scoop" by his friends) was a merchant at Mobjack for a while and eventually became Postmaster there. In 1917, he enlisted in the National Army of the United States and served as a Corporal in Company C, 314 Machine Gun Battalion. Read More	Stanley Gayle Anderton -- born January 19, 1892, the fouth son and fifth child to Columbus and Lucy Gayle Anderton. Stanley (called "Scoop" by his friends) was a merchant at Mobjack for a while and eventually became Postmaster there. In 1917, he enlisted in the National Army of the United States and served as a Corporal in Company C, 314 Machine Gun Battalion. He was stationed at Camp Fort Lee near Petersburg, Virginia, about 80 miles from Mobjack. During the Christmas Holidays of 1917, the soldiers there had the opportunity of going home for one week -- either December 22, or December 27. Stanley was scheduled for the 27th. This was an unfortunate turn of events, for on the 26th, his mother, Lucy Gayle Anderton, had a stroke and died without seeing her Stanley, the only Christmas present she had wanted. In her last letter to him on December 23rd, she wrote: "I received your letter yesterday and was so glad to hear from you, as I had not heard from you in over a week and I was afraid you were sick. I have a right bad cold but don't think it will amount to much. Well, Xmas is right here but it don't feel much like Xmas to me. If you could just be home it would be all right but I am hoping you will get home some time during the holydays (Sic.). We surely did not expect any presents from you. You ought not to think of such a thing. Your presence will be all the Xmas gift I want. I do want to see you so bad. I am sending you a small box. Have some more things for you but thought best not to send all at one time as there is such a rush in the mail. Dora brought a nice cake to send you, and has some other things but we concluded to wait until you come home. If you don't come, we'll send them to you. Bertha sends the oysters, and some cake. Ora sends some cake and I send the chicken and cake. . . I wanted to send some apples but they were too heavy to send by Parcel Post. . . . I hope you will be home next Sunday. . . I am as ever your loving Mama." Stanley was so distraught of the loss of his mother that his long-time sweetheart finally agreed to marry him. On December 31st, 1917, Stanley married Elizabeth May "Baby" White, his sister-in-law Bertha White Anderton's sister. It was so cold on their wedding night that Baby had to get up and put one of her flannel nightgowns over her negligee! On May 24, 1918, Stanley was sent to France. They left on the river steamer, New York, -- the first soldiers to sail down the James River since the Civil War! Once in Newport News, they were loaded onto the transport Mercury, formerly the German steamer, Barparosa. They left Newport News on May 26 and arrived in France on June 8, 1918. There they fought for several months in the trenches. It seemed as if all they did over there was march in the rain day after day, and dig ditches. Stanley participated in the Arton, St. Miheil and Meuse-Argonne offensives. In the diary kept while in France, Uncle Stanley commented on these types of items: the name of the town they were in at the moment, how far they had marched that day and their sleeping arrangements (pup tents, barns, brick floor, mud in the trenches, etc.) and sometimes their menu ("bully beef" and "hard tack" were the main staples). He just made statements, never complaints, until toward the end (he was there 12 months) when they were waiting for the boat to come to take them home: "Still drilling, still waiting, still hoping". There was also found the following entry in the diary: May 1919 Soldier's version of the Lord's Prayer by "Scoop" General Pershing, who art at Claremont-- Black Jack is thy name. Thy "finish" come, thy day be done, In France, as it was in Mexico. Give us this day our honorable discharges, And start us for home as thou has started Others who have gone before us. Lead us not into Germany, But deliver us from muddy France, For thou has the power, The trains, and the transports. Take us home, take us home, Amen His "prayer" was answered as he was soon homeward bound, leaving France on the Battleship New Jersey on May 21, 1919. He was discharged on June 19, 1919. Stanley resumed his job as Postmaster at Mobjack, to which he dedicated 46 years of his life, and in addition, farmed the land where he and Baby lived -- the White home place on North River where Baby had grown up. Her mother, Bettie Wise Gayle White, lived with them until her death in 1931. Baby and Stanley named the home place "Bloomsdale", an appropriate choice as their main crop, grown in the fields along the lane, was jonquils. There was a flower house in the lane where bulbs were sorted and the jonquils were boxed for shipment. There was a pink sweetheart rose bush beside the door and a pump that always needed priming. Other seasonal crops were corn, soybeans and potatoes. They had a vegetable garden beside the apple orchard, and a flower garden (with sweet peas, zinnias and "glads"); a few pigs, and lots of chickens and ducks. During the 1940's, they had a cow named Rose, and, when she had a calf, they named her "Rosebud". Stanley kept crab pots out in the creek, which he emptied daily and rebaited with fish heads or bacon from his skiff. It was to Bloomsdale that the various branches of the White family would come every summer for the infamous Fourth of July Picnic and family reunion mentioned earlier. It's a wonder Stanley didn't have an identity crisis – as he was well known by many names: "Stanley" by his acquaintances, "Scoop" by his friends and many of the relatives in his own generation, Roland and Nellie Mae called him "Bowser" and when their children were little and couldn't say "Bowser", they called him "Uncle Bow-Bow". Similarly, I couldn't pronounce "Stanley" and came up with "Gang-Gang", which I (and my brother) called him til he died (I was 19 by then). Stanley was a quiet, unassuming man with a mirthful nature and a dry wit. In his middle age, he was stooped, but one could tell he had been tall and slender. He always wore a hat when outside -- whether a straw hat to keep off the sun when he was working in the fields or mowing the 3 acre lawn of "smut" grass with his tractor, or his "Sunday" hat to church at Oak Grove Christian Church, just down the road, which he and Baby attended faithfully. Stanley also smoked a pipe. I remember his pipe, sitting beside his chair, by the oil stove in the dining room. They only used the "New Parlor" when they had company. The "Old Parlor", next to the Dining Room, was used as a guestroom. The "new" addition, consisting of the "New Parlor" and a large bedroom above it (where Grandmama and I slept) was added presumably during the time that Baby was growing up – She was the youngest of eight children when the house only had two bedrooms. Two of her older brothers had not survived early childhood. Baby and Stanley had a very special, loving relationship. Aunt Nellie Mae says she has often heard them reciting this poem to each other while at the kitchen pump doing dishes: If I could have my dearest wish fulfilled And have my choice of all Earth's treasures too, Or choose from Heaven whatsoe'er I will, -- I'd ask for you. Baby and Stanley had no children of their own, but raised Roland Anderton, Jr., the oldest of their brother and sister's children, after he was orphaned in 1927 at age ten. They lived at Bloomsdale all of their married life, until Baby's death in 1956. There was electricity at Bloomsdale but no indoor plumbing. They were having a small house "with all the conveniences" built next door to Roland, Jr. and his family. Stanley's brother, Harry (then at age 76!) was in the process of building it when Baby died suddenly. Stanley lived in the "little green house" (green asbestos shingles) after its completion until his death in February 1961. He had retired from the Post Office after 46 years service, just five months previous, due to ill health (kidney cancer). In those 46 years, he never had a sick day off from work!! Uncle Stanley was a lifelong member of Emmanuel United Methodist and also belonged to the Oak Grove Christian Church Sunday School. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge, #273, Bohannon. Stanley was buried next to Baby at Providence Cemetery. "Bloomsdale" was sold in 1962 for $12,000. What a loss for the family.
