Description	:	. Lucy Alice Gayle was born May 21, 1848, in Ware Neck -- Gloucester County, VA. She was my great-grandmother. Lucy was married on April 24, 1873 to Christopher Columbus Anderton, son of Benjamin Anderton and Elizabeth Davis of Mathews County, VA. They began their married life living with Lucy's father, Zelotes; her aunt, Eliza and sisters, Lou and Mary. Read More	. Lucy Alice Gayle was born May 21, 1848, in Ware Neck -- Gloucester County, VA. She was my great-grandmother. Lucy was married on April 24, 1873 to Christopher Columbus Anderton, son of Benjamin Anderton and Elizabeth Davis of Mathews County, VA. They began their married life living with Lucy's father, Zelotes; her aunt, Eliza and sisters, Lou and Mary. After Mary's marriage to Silas Chandler in 1881, Lucy corresponded frequently with her sister, always begging her to come for a visit and keeping her up-to-date on church affairs, the weather, health of relatives and friends and the antics of her children. There are 22 letters written by Lucy to Mary from 1881-1885. These letters were found in 1975 at the home of Lucy's daughter, Dora Anderton White and are now in the possession of my cousin, Ralph Anderton. Lucy and Columbus moved their family to Mathews in 1884. Aunt Eliza and Sister Lou came with them, as well as their three children, Bernard, Harry and Dora. Two other sons, Roland (my grandfather) and Stanley were born in Mathews. Columbus, a Confederate veteran, died September 9, 1914. Lucy lived until December 26, 1917, just a day before her youngest son, Stanley, was due home on leave from the Army. Her Christmas wish had been for him to be home for Christmas. Her cousin, Puss (Maria Gayle Williamson), was with her when she died.
