Read More	Harry Anderton Harry Elmore Anderton was born June 7, 1880 in Ware Neck Gloucester County, VA. He was a house carpenter by trade, as was his grandfather, Benjamin Anderton. There was an article in Glo-Quips, a Gloucester County newspaper, honoring Harry on his 97th birthday in 1977. After serving a carpentry apprenticeship in Fredericksburg, Virginia, he earned experience in the carpentry trade at age 16 from J. M. "Bud" Shinault, a contractor in Mathews County. Bud married into the White family. Together they built the old New Point schoolhouse, which has since been torn down. Harry would paddle his canoe from Bohannon to Mathews; Bud would meet him in his Model T and together they would go to the construction site at New Point. Harry built many homes during his long career, as well as additions and remodeling, in the Bohannon area, where he lived, and also in Mathews, Gloucester, Middlesex, Old Point and Fredericksburg. In the early years, he earned about 50 cents a day. Harry married Ora Maude White of Bohannon, daughter of John Wesley White and Susan Frances Williams, in 1908. They lived at Bohannon at Ora's family home place. Over the years, Harry added on to the house and they raised their three children there. Somehow, he could not get the floor in the addition to be quite level. Even though Harry was the carpenter in the family, if a chair needed a new rung or something needed to be painted, it would be Ora who did it. Another contribution to the family were Ora's chickens. The egg money she earned from them provided extras for the family that Harry probably never even knew about. Apparently, Ora did all the driving for them both from the time when she learned to drive in 1919 until two years before her death in 1969, after 61 years of marriage. The Andertons attended Emmanuel Methodist Church near Bohannon and Harry was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Harry always enjoyed being out on the water in his canoe and would fish from it in his spare time. He also loved music and enjoyed playing the "mouth harp" and accordion. At night he could be heard singing love songs until he fell asleep. Harry prided himself on his memory. His granddaughter, Barbara Gayle McGlohn, played a tape for me that she recorded of him at age 92. He was reciting a poem (about 3 minutes long) that he had been required to memorize at age 14, standing in front of his class, in knickers. He still knew it by heart! Harry knew all the presidents in order and the years of their election, all the books of the Bible in order, all the states, their capitals, their flowers, birds and when they joined the union. Apparently many of the Anderton men were blessed with good memories. Harry "was a man of routine; he did the same thing at set times every day. He ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same time every day. When working, he would take a break at 10:00 am every day for a snack or a cigarette. He would finish work the same time, 4:00 PM, even if he had one more brick to lay. He would come back the next day and lay that one brick". And, he always had a large vegetable garden. This continued up until his death on April 20, 1978, almost 98 years old!
