| Description | : | State Senator Gideon Edwards was the son of William Harrison Edwards and Grizzel/Grisel Edwards, nee Coleman. Gideon served in the North Carolina State Regiment earning the rank of Captain during the American Revolutionary War. Additionally, Gideon served as a state senator for North Carolina. and was a lead planter in Surry County. Gideon built the original Edwards-Franklin Plantation House in 1799. Later the home was occupied by his daughter Mildred Matilda and her husband Congressman Meshack Franklin, the brother of Governor Jesse Franklin, 20th Governor of North Carolina.
