Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. Pastor Beryl Hicks and Pastor Tom Steele of the First Church of Christ in Akron will officiate. Burial with military honors provided by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Fletcher was born March 29, 1920 on the family farm in Union County, South Dakota, the son of Lawrence and Nora (Nall) Fletcher. He attended Sayles country school and later high school in Akron. While in high school, Darcy was a captain on the football team. He graduated from Akron High School in 1938. He was united in marriage to Joy Coleman on July 22, 1942 in Dakota City, Nebraska. Three days later, Darcy entered the United States Army. He served his country during WWII in the Anti Aircraft Artillery while stationed in Asia. He was honorably discharged on November 10, 1945 after attaining the rank of Staff Sgt. For his service to his country, he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Asian-Pacific Medal with two bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, China Theatre Medal, One Service Stripe, and two Overseas Services Bars. After his return, the couple farmed in Union County, South Dakota for many years. Darcy served on the Union Creek Sayles Water Board in its infancy. He served as chairman of the Hoyt School Board and helped with its reorganization into the Greater Hoyt School District, serving 35 years as its chairman. After retiring, they moved into Akron. Darcy served for six years on the Akron-Westfield School Board. In 2002, they moved to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa to be closer to their family. Joy passed away February 12, 2007 in Sergeant Bluff. Darcy was a faithful member of the First Church of Christ in Akron, having served as a Sunday school teacher, trustee, elder, and treasurer for 50 years. He was a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron. Survivors include his son: Dennis Fletcher of Sergeant Bluff, IA; 3 grandchildren: Missy (Gene) Kolar of Sergeant Bluff, IA and their children, Abby and Andy, Cam (Megan) Fletcher of Allen, TX, and their children, Blake and Hadley, and Ashley Fletcher (fiance Paul Wilson) of Sioux City, IA; sisters in law: Jerrine (Red) Nordgren of Sioux City, IA and Margaret Fletcher of Chicago, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joy Fletcher; 6 brothers: Edgar, Roland, Floyd, Ray, Quigley, and Elmo; 4 sisters: Lora Johnson, Lorene Moehling, Muriel Fletcher, and Maude Fletcher; and daughter in law: Sue Fletcher. Memorials can be made in Darcy's name to Hospice of Siouxland.
