COATES A GOOD MAN AND A KIND NEIGHBOR, SCORES MOURN HIS DEATH. David R. Coates was born at Covington, Miami county, Ohio, June 4, 1847. He came with his parents to Iowa when five years old. He gave his life to the occupation of farming, which he followed until three years ago, living in Iowa County, Iowa. In 1873 he was united in marriage with Sarah Noaker. To this union were born seven boys and five girls. All survive but two, who passed away in early life; Hattie at 10 months and Roy at 6 years and 10 months. Mr. Coates had not been well for several years; one year ago Christmas he was stricken with paralysis, from which time his health was much impaired, and he gradually grew worse. Since about six months ago the suffering was severe. Only his rugged constitution kept the end from coming sooner. For three weeks before he died he was unable to take food. One marked feature of these days of intense suffering was that of unusual patience. There came into his life at this period a decided change; he prayed and found the new life that a Christian enjoys. Thus he was anxious to go; and asked God to take him. Only one regret was expressed by him, and that was that he was sorry he had not lived the Christian life and helped others to do so. The message that he left behind was, "An exhoriation that we might not make this mistake, but that we might live and set the right example for others." On Wednesday night, March 30, passing from a period of three hours intense suffering, into a period of restfulness, he quietly departed, about 2:00 a.m., aged 68 years, 9 mo. and 26 days. He leaves behind: Two brothers and one sister: J. J. Coates of Ladora; Eli Coates and Lizzie Elliott of Koszta; six sons-W. E. Coates, Jim and Chas. of Victor; H. L. Coats of Cedar Rapids; H. M. Coates of Curew, Iowa; and Blaine Coates of Leport, Colo. Four daughters - Mrs. Frank Mohr of Victor, Mrs. Chester Davis of Cedar, Iowa, Mrs. John Heller of Koszta; and Elva Coates of Victor; and 28 grand grand children. The funeral was held at the M. E. church in Victor on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
