Active pallbearers were Neil Leiseth, Danny Poland, Zane Torgrude, Jerry Johnson, Steve Johnson and Don Guthmiller. He was born Dec. 8, 1922, at a farm two miles east of Hayti to Edwin and Inga (Estensen) Johnson. He attended school in Hayti and after high school, he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He was employed at Anderson Machines and Telex in Minneapolis. He joined the U.S. Army in June of 1943. Before leaving for overseas duty, he married Virginia Erickson Nov. 13, 1943. He served in the South Pacific for more than two years with the 25th Infantry Division, repairing artillery, small arms and machine guns. His division was committed to 165 days of combat on Luzon in the Philippines. Upon returning home in August of 1946, he farmed with his brother, Harold. In 1957, he became postmaster in Hayti and moved his family into Hayti. While in the post office, he was in charge of route consolidation for the Sioux Falls District. He retired from the post office in 1982 and formed a partnership, J&L Machines, with Neil Leiseth. After selling the business to Neil, he owned Johnson Machines until March of 1995 when he retired. In 2002, he moved to Maple Grove with his wife. He was a man of his word, loved his family, God and was brilliant with machines. There was not a job he couldn't figure out how to do. He was an active member of the Hayti Lutheran Church, holding various offices. In his early years, he was very active in the Hayti Community Club. He belonged to the Cook-Olsen Post 217 of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra K. Christensen. Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Maple Grove; one daughter, June and her husband Roger Olson of Aitkin, Minn.; one son-in-law, Tom Christensen of Brewster, Mass.; one brother, Ronald and his wife Beverly Johnson, of Lemmon; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Buri and Bessie Stolp, both of Hayti; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
