He died of cancer on 8 Aug 1983 in Butte County, California. ***** Obituary from Messenger of Truth Issue 18, 1983: My dearly beloved husband, our father and grandfather, David Leonard Giesbrecht, was born to Cornelius V. and Katherina Fast Giesbrecht on March 19, 1914, at Winton, California. He fell asleep and went to his reward on August 8, 1983, at the sunset of day, reaching the age of 69 years, 4 months, and 20 days. David spent his last two weeks of suffering at the Enloe Hospital in Chico, California. He spent his boyhood years in and around Winton and Firebaugh, California. At the age of eighteen, he felt his lost condition and need of a Saviour. Upon repentance, confession of sins, and faith in Jesus, he experienced the new birth, which brought joy and peace to his heart. He was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in November of 1932. He remained faithful to these sacred vows to the end. On October 9, 1938, he found his life's companion and helpmeet in me, Mary Loewen. We shared life's joys and sorrows together for almost forty-five years. The Lord blessed our marriage with seven sons and one daughter. We resided at Winton, California, until January of 1952, when he saw it best to move his beloved family to Glenn, California, there to help start a new congregation. Spiritual matters were dear to his heart and soul. He was ordained to the deacon's office at Winton, California in 1946 and endeavored to work in this capacity as much as the Lord called him to do. He was ordained by Minister F. C. Fricke. He was a hard worker and provided well for his household and also loved to help others. He was a lover of company, especially for meals, and was given to hospitality. He served the Church on the Colonization Board, which he loved to do. He was also privileged to foster two boys, James Parnell and Teddy LaCour, who were dear to his heart. Dad was always kind and loving to all, but his grandchildren found a special place in his heart and life. His concern was that they would live so they could all meet him in Heaven someday. Those who are left to cherish loving memories are: me, his sorrowing wife, Mary; seven sons: Jesse and wife Arlene; Ervy and wife Karen; Raymond and wife Melba; David, Jr., and wife Janet; James and wife Lena Rose; Harry and wife Doris; Walter and wife Beth; one daughter, Annie Fay and husband Rodney Koehn; twenty-six grandchildren, all of Glenn, California; his father-in-law, C. G. Loewen of Glenn; four brothers and four sisters: Ben and wife Marianne; Henry and wife Frances; Abe and wife Edna, all of Glenn; Pete and wife Edna, of Scooba, Mississippi; Lena, Mrs. John Friesen; Sarah, Mrs. Jake Friesen, of Buhl, Idaho; Mary, Mrs. Orville Unruh, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; Eva, Mrs. Gerald Davis, of Lehigh, Kansas; also a host of relatives and friends. Father was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, one sister, and four brothers. Funeral services were held August 12, 1983, at the Glenn Mennonite Church, Glenn, California. Ministers Edward Jantz, John Jantz, and Robert Koehn were in charge. Burial was in the Willows Cemetery, Willows, California.
