Dean was born on December 31, 1926, in Batavia, New York, to James and Julia Brown. Dean was born on December 31, 1926, in Batavia, New York, to James and Julia Brown. Graduating from Batavia High School in 1945, Dean received his undergraduate degree in journalism from Syracuse University and his Master’s Degree from University of Iowa. In 1949, Dean married Mary Ella Lamb from Urbandale, Iowa. Together they raised four children Tim, Priscilla, Nancy and Susan. After five years as a writer-editor for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan, Dean, in 1958, joined the United States Information Agency and embarked on a 26-year career in the foreign service. He served as a magazine editor and publisher in Manila, Philippines (1959-1963 and 1970-1975), and New Delhi, India (1963-1969), then as Cultural Affairs Officer in Kingston, Jamaica (1977-1980), and finally as Director of the American Center and Library in Islamabad, Pakistan (1981-1984). Dean and Mary retired to Bethesda, Maryland, and spent many years traveling, photographing, and enjoying their children and grandchildren. Mary passed away in 2008. More than being a highly successful promoter of democracy, Dean was a compassionate man and a very loyal friend. His creative energy was contagious. He had a passion for music, theater, books, history, and art. He was an accomplished painter, and photographer both of real-life subjects and tabletop constructions. He is known for recreating famous master paintings using Barbie and other fashion dolls as models. Dean’s tabletop work enjoyed a solo exhibition in the Tartt Gallery in Washington, DC, in 1993, and in a group exhibition in New York City in 1994. A lifelong, ardent Democrat, Dean was determined to see Trump voted out of office, this great democracy saved, and President Biden inaugurated. He lived to see those goals accomplished. Dean is survived by his children, Tim Brown (Julia Brown), Priscilla Lucas (Bruce), Nancy Colvin (Perry), and Susan Brown-Wadleigh. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Archie and Copernicus Brown, Perry Anthony, Antonio and Sophia Colvin, and Ben Wadleigh; as well as his sister, Ann Jensen (Fred); nephews, Fred Jensen Jr., Andrew Jensen; and niece, Rebecca Jensen Ashley. We will miss him with all our hearts and souls.
