Description	:	Catalonian Volunteer with 1769 Portolá Expedition Domingo Arús (Spanish: Aruz) y Monteguda was the son of José Arús of Barcelona and Margarita Monteguda of Girona, Province of Catalonia. He enlisted as a Catalonian Volunteer with Captain Agustín Callis about 1766 and sailed for New Spain (México) from Cádiz May 27, 1767. He participated in the Sonoran Expedition with Captain Callis in late 1767. Read More	Catalonian Volunteer with 1769 Portolá Expedition Domingo Arús (Spanish: Aruz) y Monteguda was the son of José Arús of Barcelona and Margarita Monteguda of Girona, Province of Catalonia. He enlisted as a Catalonian Volunteer with Captain Agustín Callis about 1766 and sailed for New Spain (México) from Cádiz May 27, 1767. He participated in the Sonoran Expedition with Captain Callis in late 1767. When Captain Pedro Fáges assumed command of the Catalonian Volunteers in 1769, Domingo was one of only 17 original members of the regiment who had sailed from Cádiz in 1767. He accompanied Captain Fáges as part of the 1769 Portolá Expedition to Alta California and was posted to the Monterey Presidio. While posted at Monterey he married (1) María Serafina Verdugo, an Indian convert, May 20, 1773 (SC Marriage 00181). María was born at Ranchería Achasta and baptized at Mission San Carlos (Carmel) when she was about 15 years old February 21, 1773 (SC Baptism 00069). When the Catalonian Volunteers were ordered to Tépic, Nayarit (México), in late 1773, Domingo requested a transfer to the soldados de cuera ("leather jackets") so he could remain in Alta California with his wife. With the help of Father Junípero Serra, it was approved and the Catalonian Volunteers left Monterey in June 1774 without him. Two other Catalonian Volunteers also stayed behind with their Indian wives at Monterey, Manuel Butrón and José Antonio Yorba. Domingo and María Serafina were blessed with four children. María Serafina died at Mission San Luís Obisbo, where she was buried December 9, 1780 (SLO Death 00079). Domingo was transferred to Mission San Buenaventura where he married (2) María Gertrudis (Castelo y Valenzuela) Quintero November 12, 1782 (SBV Marriage 00002, ECPP). María Gertrudis was the orphaned daughter of Nicolás Castelo and María Rita Gertrudis Valenzuela of Alamos, Sonora. She was adopted at Alamos by Los Angeles pobladores Luís Quintero and María Petra Rubio and was present at the founding of Los Angeles September 4, 1781. Domingo and María Gertrudis had only one child, Martiniano José, who was killed when he fell from a horse. Domingo retired to Los Angeles, where he appears as household No. 23 in the 1790 Census (Padron).
