Doris was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Havre to Olga and John Guy Hockett. She was extremely proud of her Halloween birthday and how everyone celebrated her day. Read More	Doris Evans laid down to take a nap before lunch on April 29, 2013, and took a detour to Heaven to join several members of her family and friends. Doris was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Havre to Olga and John Guy Hockett. She was extremely proud of her Halloween birthday and how everyone celebrated her day. Her mother passed away in 1936 and her father later remarried Willa. Doris was the youngest of four children. Her siblings Gladys, Clarence and Lorraine preceded her in death. Her husband and her son also preceded her in death. Doris was raised and went to high school in Havre, where she graduated in 1942. The sounds of train whistles, railroad engines and cars clacking along the tracks near where she grew up gave her immense joy. Later she was to work and subsequently retire as a railroad telegrapher. In June 1945, Doris married Donald J. Evans, of Red Lodge, and through his commission as a Naval pilot, she became an officer's wife until the 1960s, when the family returned to Billings. In Billings, she worked with her husband at their business, Evans Office Machines. She later worked road construction on the Cooke City pass. Doris was Mom to Dana, David and Denise. With her son David, she worked several seasons fighting forest fires in Montana. She was always on an adventure traveling the world — Japan, Canada, Australia, Norway, Hawaii and places in between — over the years, Montana remained her favorite place to be. She made friends of all ages, worldwide and at home. One of her biggest fans was 3-year-old Addison Benson who delighted herself just being in Doris' company. For local trips closer to home, her traveling companion was her hip-rider Pomeranian, Tootsie. Doris loved her cabin, her mountains and her wildlife. She liked gardening and painting. She loved the outdoors and all things athletic — she was a figure skater and an excellent swimmer. With her two sisters, Doris biked through Glacier National Park several times. She enjoyed riding motorcycles. She loved pine trees … if there were pine trees to be planted, Doris wanted to plant them — last year she planted 100 baby pine trees near her home, and when finished, she pulled up a chair to read while she watered them. There are no words to sum up Doris's life, she was a free spirit, always traveling and making friends. She was wonderfully eccentric and always offered her friendship and support to those who needed it. She will be missed. Survivors are daughters, Dana Evans and Denise Hilario (Andy); grandchildren Caine, Jill and Dana Hilario; Genevieve and Tyler Evans; and great-grandchildren Madison and Andrea Hilario. A special thank you to Highgate Senior Living for being so wonderful. Memorial service will be Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel West, 304 34th St. W. Following the memorial service, Doris will be laid to rest among family members in Havre. In lieu of memorials, please plant a pine tree in memory of Doris!
