Dorothy was born on March 2, 1913 in the 1892 Hultgren farmhouse in Union County South Dakota, the daughter of John Alfred and Esther Othelia (Ericson) Hultgren. She was baptized at Union Creek Lutheran on March 22, 1913 and later confirmed at the same church on June 30, 1927. She received her first eight years of education at the West Union Rural School, south of the Hultgren farm in Sioux Valley Township. She graduated from Akron High School in 1930 and was presently the oldest alumnus of that school. She was a nursing student of the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City but because of lung sickness was forced to leave the school. Even though she did not become a registered nurse because of her advanced training, she worked as a nurse at the old Akron Hospital on the hill, assisting Dr. J.H. Kerr in the operating room. Dorothy lived in Chicago for many years, owning and operating a business called "Dorothy's Gift Shop". She also worked at various positions in Chicago, including manager of a very large school lunch program for the Chicago School System. She held this position until retirement. She married Henry Borgman in Chicago on October 21, 1950. They built a new home in Chicago where they lived for many years. After retirement, Dorothy and Henry retired to Arizona during the winter and lived in Alcester, South Dakota during the summer. Dorothy was active in church work wherever she lived. She was a supporter of all good causes, held leadership positions, and assisted in any way she could. She was consistently a generous person all her life. She was always interested in everyone's life, especially the work of the church and the agricultural community where she had personal interest. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Akron for 28 years and also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Alcester. Dorothy was a very talented person. She was creative at making crosses, picture frames, containers for articles, fancy work, embroidering, and an avid card player. She organized pictures and other keepsakes for safekeeping. She was also a talented artist; family and friends treasure many of her framed paintings. This last year she was a resident of Morningside Manor in Alcester for four months but left the nursing home to fly to Arizona to her home there. Dorothy recently renewed her South Dakota driver's license for five more years; she passed the eye test without glasses! The morning of her death, she was dressed for church and was planning on driving there herself when she died. Participation at church services was always very important to Dorothy Hultgren Borgman. Survivors include a brother, Dennis E. Hultgren (Nelda) of rural Akron; a sister: Ione E. Lucht (Chris) of Tempe, AZ; two step- daughters: Marilyn LaSpina of Palm Bay, FL. and Dorothy Rubenson of Richland, WA.; and her nieces and nephews: Brenda Bintz (Jack), Melinda Nimtz (John), Chris John "CJ" Lucht, Paul Lucht, Nancy Forsythe (Willard), Jean Doty (Dene), Jahn Hultgren (Colleen), and Ruth Henneman (Scott). She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Esther Othelia Hultgren; her brother: Esley John Hultgren; her husband, Henry C. Borgman on November 18, 1982; and her step-mother, Esther Marie Hultgren. Memorials can be made in Dorothy's name to the Alcester Senior Citizen's Center.
