HULTGREN ARE HELD SUNDAY Was an Esteemed Life-long Resident of Union County, South Dakota Mention was made in those columns last week of the death of John A. Hultgren, a well known farmer of Union county, northwest of town, who succumbed to a sudden attack of heart trouble on Wednesday afternoon, September 27, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., where he had gone with his wife to attend the Century of Progress. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 52 years, 8 months and 1 day. John Alfred Hultgren was born January 26, 1881, in Sioux Valley Township, Union county, South Dakota, on the Hultgren farm. There he spent the days of his boyhood, as well as the days of his manhood. There he experienced both joy and sorrow, success and reverses. He was baptized, confirmed and married at the Union Creek Lutheran church. On June 6, 1911, he was united in marriage with Miss Esther Ericson. They were blessed with two children, a daughter and son. Mrs. Hultgren and the baby boy passed away March 10, 1915. On November 25, 1926, he was united in marriage with Miss Esther Johnson, and this union was blessed with two children, a son and a daughter. Mr. Hultgren had enjoyed the best of health until five years ago, when he became afflicted with heart disease, which finally came to a fatal termination. By his passing, this community has lost one of its best citizens; a man of good report, true and loyal; a leader in church and community affairs; a man who has been much interested in the progress of this neighborhood, as well as county and state. He was always willing to work for the furtherance of things honorable in the sight of God and man. He was not easily stirred up or moved by public sentiment, but always true to his convictions. He had a most likable disposition. You would always see him happy and cheerful. Even his affliction could not down his spirit. He was good-hearted and kind, usually the first one to offer assistance when it was needed. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy." Mr. Hultgren served on many important committees in county and township, and devoted much time to Red Cross work. He was a member of the township board. He was known to be one of the best farmers of this community, and farmed on a large scale. He was a staunch church member, and served the church in various capacities. He held the office of trustee for many years, was a member of the church building committee, active in Sunday school, president and treasurer of the Luther League, represented the congregation at Conference and Synod meetings, attended church regularly. He was one of the best supporters of his church—a liberal giver. He was a good friend of the pastors who have served him. They were always welcome at his home and often received encouragement from him. His family life was most ideal, for he was a loving husband and a kind father. The home was the center of his earthly happiness. Nothing could take the place of his home here on earth and thus guarded it as a sacred heritage. We many wonder why his useful life was cut short and why he was not permitted to carry on, but we know that whatever the Lord does is for the best and that “All things work together for good to those that love the Lord,” and therefore we humbly submit to the will of God. He leaves to mourn, his beloved wife, Esther Hultgren; two daughters, Dorothy and Ione, and one son Dennis; two brothers, Michael and Elmer Hultgren; one sister, Mrs. Will Ericson, all of this vicinity, and many other relatives, together with a host of friends, who unite in tendering sincerest sympathy to the bereaved ones. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth. Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works to follow them.” Peace to his memory! The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, October 1, at the Union Creek Lutheran Church, and was one of the largest ever held in the community. The pastor, Rev. D.J. Edward, had charge of the service, assisted by Rev. C.W. Samuelson, of Akron. Interment was made in the family lot at the church cemetery.
