A. Schmidt had passed away at Postville Hospital, his demise following a severe attack of streptococcic throat with which he was stricken last Thursday, his death occurring on the sixty-second anniversary of his birth. Dr. Arthur Albert Schmidt, an only child of Dr. Henry and Catherine Schmidt, was born at Guttenberg, Iowa, January 22, 1872, and as a mere lad accompanied his parents to Richmond, Minn., where most of his childhood days were passed. After completing his high school education he attended St. John's University at St. Cloud, Minn., from which he graduated with honor. As both his father and grandfather were doctors before him it was but natural that his inclinations should be toward medicine and hence he entered the Keokuk Medical College at Keokuk, Iowa, graduating in 1893, and located first in Garnavillo, Iowa, where he practiced for about twelve years. On June 13, 1895, he was united in marriage to Miss Ottila Brandt, who with two daughters, Miss Leila Schmidt and Dr. Joyce G. Spurgeon, both of this city, survive him; a son, Aloys, died at the age of five years and ten months. Early in 1906 the doctor located for brief periods at Fort Dodge, Iowa, and at Richmond, Minn. In November of 1906, Dr. Schmidt located in Postville, where for the past twenty-seven years he has enjoyed a large and lucrative practice. Here he established Postville Hospital, the first institution of its kind in Allamakee county, which was equipped modern throughout and was rated as one of the very best small town hospitals in the state of Iowa, and since its founding has attracted surgical and medical patients from an ever-widening area. Of late years he has been ably assisted in its conduct by his daughter, Dr. Joyce G. Spurgeon. Dr. Schmidt was one of the outstanding medical and surgical men of Northeast Iowa and was held in high regard by the members of his profession. He was a member of the Iowa State Medical Society and at one time was president of the Allamakee group. For many years and until the time of his passing, he has been Health Physician of the town of Postville and was also the local surgeon of the Rock Island railway. He was ever a student and kept fully abreast of the advancement made by his profession for the benefit of mankind. He was always a booster for his home town and community, being ever ready to give generously of his time, talents and means to promote those things which would redound to their welfare. He served for a time as president of the Postville Commercial Club of which organization he was an active member for many years. He was also a director of the Highway 55 Improvement Association, which had a large part in promoting this fine paved highway between Minneapolis and Dubuque. Fraternally he was affiliated with Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204, A. F. & A. M. and Postville Chapter No. 238, Order of the Eastern Star, both of this city. He was also a beneficiary member of Oak Camp No. 328, M. W. A. and Noble Lodge No. 51, A. O. U. W., being Master Workman of the last named society at the time of his death. The foregoing is in brief the life story of one who as a husband, father, citizen and friend measured well up to the full stature of a man, whose passing is mourned by all who knew this genial gentleman, and the tenderest sympathy of his legion friends goes out in tenderest sympathy to those bound to him by a closer tie. The funeral will be held from the Postville Community Presbyterian church at one o'clock this (Thursday) afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Marvin Brandt, pastor of the First Congregational church of Akron, Ohio, a brotherinlaw of deceased, and assisted by Dr. R. F. Galloway and the Masonic fraternity, G. W. Hunt of Guttenberg, a long time friend of the deceased, officiating for the local lodge. Interment will be made in the family plot in the Garnavillo cemetery. +++ Arthur A. Schmidt, MD The study of medicine affords to the student in that science a never-ending source for investigation and experiments. New remedies are being constantly discovered, steady progress is being made in surgery and new diseases are presenting themselves under varying forms of civilization. In the noble army of workers in this great field Dr. Schmidt takes a prominent place. He is a popular young physician of Garnavillo, Clayton County, and was born January 22, 1872, in Guttenberg, Iowa, the son of Dr. Henry and Catherine (Schulte) Schmidt. His father was born in Breslau, Germany, February 28, 1819. At the age of nine years he went to Edinburg, where he took a classical course and afterwards a course of study in Edinburg Medical College. After finishing his education he was appointed Medical Director in the English army and went to Australia; he remained there about two years, then went to San Francisco, Cal. In 1860 he returned to Breslau, his birthplace, to visit his brother and sister. After a visit of several years he returned to the United States and located in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he practiced at his profession for one year. In the year 1869 he came to Guttenberg, Iowa, where he made his home for five years, and from there he went to Mankato, Minn., where he resided for six years. In 1880 he moved to Richmond, Minn., where he spent the remainder of his days. He died of consumption in 1893. He was known as one of the best surgeons belonging to the State Medical Society and was the first Mayor of Richmond for two years. He also served as Coroner at the same place for six years. He was married in 1870 to Miss Catherine Schulte, a daughter of William Schulte, who died here in 1878. The mother of our subject is still living at Richmond, Minn. She was born in March, 1850. She has only one child and that is our subject. His maternal grandmother is still living and resides in this township. At the age of nine years Dr. Arthur Schmidt entered St. John's University at Collegeville, Minn., where he remained six years. He then spent two years in the State Normal at St. Cloud, Minn., after which he entered the medical department of the State University at Minneapolis, where he remained one year. He spent the next three years at the Medical College of Keokuk, Iowa, where he graduated March 7, 1893. He returned to Richmond, Minn., where he practiced his profession for the first time. January 20, 1894,, he came to Garnavillo, where he has since made his home. He makes surgery a specialty and has a large and extensive practice throughout the county. In his religious belief he is a Catholic and a member of that church at Garnavillo. Politically a Democrat, he takes a deep interest in the success of his party.
