Craig, D.D.S., left to be with God at age 92 early Wednesday morning, Sept. 28, 2011, following a brief hospital stay. Dr. Craig was born in Somerville, Mo., on Feb. 12, 1919. A longtime resident of Floydada, Dr. Craig served his patient community until 1999. The son of Hiram and Leona Craig, Charles was raised in a variety of settings as a child and young adult as the Depression and the early death of his parents presented some unique challenges. Dr. Craig started his prolonged education process at Bolivar Jr. College and was drafted into the then-Army Air Corps to serve in WWII. Dr. Craig's service was mostly in Egypt and North Africa before being stationed stateside at San Marcos Army Air Base where he met and married Mary Alice Jordan of Mason, Texas. Completing his undergraduate education at Baylor University in 1949, Craig then was accepted to Baylor Dental School in Dallas where he received his D.D.S. in 1952. After a brief practice in Amherst, Texas, Craig then moved in 1955 to Floydada where he practiced dentistry and resided until his death. An avid pilot and hunter, Dr. Craig also made time to make 42 missionary trips over 39 years to Mexico and Central America at his expense to provide dental treatment to Indian tribes and remote villages that did not have access to care. Dr. Craig was a supporter of the Boys Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver, one of that organization's highest civilian honors. Dr. Craig was a member of the local Lions Club chapter and regularly attended meetings. He also held several offices, including president of the Flying Dentists Association, an organization dedicated to dentists with the passion of flying as their hobby. He was a charter member of that organization for 52 years. The Floydada Chamber of Commerce recognized him as Citizen of the Year in 1997. He was a member of the Flying Octogenarians, and in 2007 received the FAA Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Dr. Craig actively flew well past his 91st birthday. Dr. Craig is survived by two sons, Steve and Mark; two grandsons, Kevin and Kelly (Allison); and one great-grandson named after him, Charles Aaron Craig. A brief memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Floydada at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011. Dr. Craig's cremains will be placed at his father and mother's gravesites in southwest Missouri. The family has requested that any charitable donations be made to the Charles C. Craig Medical/Dental Scholarship Fund, c/o First National Bank, 124 S. Main St., Floydada, TX 79235. Services are held under the direction of the Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada.
