Dr. Charles Sweet, known throughout Connecticut, and in fact all New England, as a natural bone setter, died in his native town of Lebanon, Conn., Tuesday, aged 85 years. Dr. Sweet probably treated more cases of a bone setting character than any other man in the United States, and his friend estimate that he has operated in over 100,000 cases. He was born in Lebanon in 1811 and came of a family nearly every one of the male members of which acquired renown for natural bone-setting ability, and who obtained little or no education. Charles Sweet was emphatically adept at this business, and became more widely known than his grandfather, John Sweet, who in the War of the Revolution practised [sic] with great success among the officers of the American and French troops. At the age of 16 years Charles Sweet, with little or no education, began the practice of setting bones, and his business literally ran away from him, so greatly were his services demanded. For 40 years he maintained an office in Hartford, and once a month went to Springfield, Mass., where he had a branch office. The most difficult cases were the easiest for him, and he has been considered as the climax of a family which, as far back as the family history goes, displayed wonderful ability in bone surgery. Cases despaired of by eminent surgeons were successfully treated by Dr. Sweet. Dr. Sweet was married three times, and his third wife, with seven children, survive him. -------------------------
