Marks, veteran Valley Falls physician and one of Jefferson County's leading practitioners for more than forty years, passed away Saturday night at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. His death resulted from chronic leukemia from which he had suffered for the past ten years. However, he had continued in his service to the community until Saturday, Oct. 27, entering the hospital on Monday, Oct. 29. All treatment during his last week was to no avail. His service in the county began in the horse-and-buggy days and he soon became widely known throughout the county, having served as county health officer for many years. He became recognized by Topeka and Kansas City physicians and surgeons as an accurate diagnostician. Only three years ago, Dr. and Mrs. Marks entertained in recognition of his forty years of service, and hundreds of friends and former patients called, evidencing the high regard in which he was held. To the many families in this community who have had the benefit of his advice and ministrations for the past forty-three years, his passing will be an irreparable loss. __________ OBITUARY -- MARKS Joseph Milliard Marks was born December 4, 1881 on a farm near Stark, Kansas and passed away November 4, 1951, age 69 years, 10 months and 29 days. He was one of a family of eleven children. After graduating from the Valley Falls high school, he taught a country school for one year. At that time he entered the University Medical College of Kansas City. At the completion of his course, he interned at the Wabash Railroad Hospital in Moberly, Mo. In 1908 he entered into medical practice at Denison, Kansas for a period of one year, after which he returned to Valley Falls to establish his practice here. He served in World War I as Captain in the Medical Corps, being stationed at a Base Hospital in France until the signing of the Armistice. On August 16, 1921 he was united in marriage with Sarah Louise McDowell, to which union four daughters were born. For forty-three years he gave his untiring strength and faithful devotion in serving the Valley Falls community, establishing a high standard of professional services by responding to all calls regardless of financial circumstances. In 1941 he became aware that he was stricken with chronic leukemia. Struggling constantly against the overwhelming weakness that is so characteristic of this disease, he maintained his high standard of service to the community until one week before his passing. He was a Past President and the only honorary member of the Valley Falls Rotary club, a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge. Dr. Marks was formerly a member of the Christian Church, and after his marriage joined the Methodist Church and was a trustee for many years. He was also a member of the County, State, and American Medical Associations. For several years he served as County Health Officer of Jefferson County. Surviving him are his wife, Sadie, of the home, four daughters, Mrs. Leela Belle Lonnecker of Merriam, Kansas, Mrs. Leeta Nelle Lagerstrom of Pueblo, Colorado, Mrs. Sarah Miller of Cambridge, Mass., and Mrs. Mildred Ready of London, Ontario, Canada; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Fiske of Caldwell, Kansas, Mrs. J. E. Long of Long Beach, California; two brothers, Lloyd Marks of Kansas City, Mo., and Virgil Marks of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and seven grandchildren. Funeral services are being conducted this ( Wednesday ) afternoon, Nov. 7, 1951, at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Church, with the pastor, Rev. J. S. Bottoms, officiating. A men's quartet, Robert Reichart, Fred Reichart, Giles Barker and Alvin Hefty will sing Nearer My God To Thee and The Old Rugged Cross, with Miss Marie Barr at the organ. pallbearers will be F. F. Hurst, W. E. Benman, J. W. Mitchell, Chas. Gephart, Roy Lott, Clyde Brooks, Ben Thornburg and L. S. Barker. Burial will be in the Valley Falls cemetery. Dr. J. M. Marks is gone from the community which meant so much to him and he will be missed more and more by those to whom he was not only physician, but friend. His practice of medicine in the community before the days of the miracle drugs called for a real knowledge of medicine, and he also had that trait, which really makes a country doctor -- the knack of combining psychology with medicine. He knew his patients before he prescribed. To some he seemed unkind, but they profited most by his treatment. His care of elderly patients, his response to any and all emergencies, gives the younger generation in the medical profession something for which to strive. Even in his last months, weeks and days of practice, few of his patients were in as critical a condition as "J.M." himself. His early experience with all types of mangling accidents made him an accident surgeon, for which many in this community may be eternally grateful. Stitches taken by him in cases of accidents left less of scars than many of those applied by more renown surgeons under the lights in a hospital. He was also recognized as one of the most capable bone "surgeons" in the state. The fact that his diagnosis, although perhaps questioned at first by the hospital surgeons, proved right time after time, led him to be held in great respect. His thought that everyone was interested in the illness of a friend, made him report such illnesses in his local paper -- always respecting those who said -- "Don't say anything about it." Farming was a hobby, without which in later years, he would have lost much interest, but his farms produced certified seed which he was proud to acclaim. To the very last minute, he was still actively interested in a fence to be built at his farm south of town. There is nothing that the families and people of the community can do now to make things easier for "J.M." -- but for years they will be remembering the things "J.M." did for them-- his quick response to any and all calls in time of need.
