Edmiston, a physician in Lawrence for the past 33 years, is going into "experimental retirement". He has sold his home at 801 Ark. St. to W. D. Wolfe, superintendent of schools, and Ms. Wolfe and plans to leave today or tomorrow for Dahlgren, Va., with his daughter, Mrs. Richard Potter, who has been visiting here. / At a dinner which the Douglas County Medical Society gave Tuesday night for Dr. Edmiston, he admitted to his fellow physicians that he isn't sure he's going to like loafing, and that they might see him back in Lawrence next month. However, for the present, he will make his home with his daughter (Doris) and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Potter, at Dahlgren. And he intends to do some angling with the fishing rod which was the gift of the Medical Society. / Dr. Edmiston was born in Americaus, and attended high school and two years of college at Emporia State Teachers College. He then entered K.U. and was graduated in 1917 with a degree in medicine. A year of internship followed, and then he entered the service. He served during World War I at Camp Funston, at Ft. Riley, with the Tenth Division. The military was just beginning to move his outfit overseas in the fall of 1918 when the armistice was signed. / Receiving his discharge from the Army on March 25, 1919, Dr. Edmiston began practice here seven days later. In 1920 he married Hazel M. Magg, a nursing graduate from the University of Michigan, who had served overseas during the war. Mrs. Edmiston died last July. They have two daughters, Mrs. Potter and Mrs. George Wills (Jean Edmiston), of Wichita. / Dr. Edmiston served from 1922 to 1924 as assistant physician for the K.U. Student Health Service, and then became superintendent and physician for the Service, remaining until 1928. In November, 1946, he became consultant in anesthesiology at Watkins, the student hospital at K.U. He has been much in demand as an anesthetist at Lawrence Memorial Hospital where he has been a staff member since beginning to practice here. / For four years he was local surgeon for the Santa Fe Railroad and was medical advisor to the Douglas County Draft board from the beginning of Selective Service of World War II until his recent resignation. Dr. Edmiston is also a past president of the Douglas County Medical Association, is a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of the American Legion. / Dr. and Mrs. Edmiston built their home at 801 at Ark. St. in 1927 and moved there in May, 1928. The Lawrence physician, a travel enthusiast, is looking forward to visiting the historical spots around Dahlgren, Va. The home of Robert E. Lee, built in the early 1700s, is only 40 miles from the home of his daughter. / But Dr. Edmiston speaks lovingly of Lawrence as "a good town" and adds, "I hate to leave it—even temporarily." / Speaking of Dr. Edmiston, Dr. M. T. Sadler, long time Lawrence physician, said today, "He has done a good job here. Dr. Edmonton is one of those who served the community so well that his work has come to be accepted without comment until we lose it."
